OSU rolled over a rebuilding WVU team 40-3 as Daton Fix and Kaden Gfeller both picked up ranked wins. Here’s a recap.

Match of the Dual: Kaden Gfeller vs. Christian Monserrat

Kaden gets a takedown in the first and rideout to go up 2-0 heading into the second. In the second he gets a pretty quick escape to go up 3-0, in the third he gives up one, but no more scoring and he wins 3-1. Sandwiched around those three scores there were a lot of good scrambles and other exchanges that made this one a lot of fun. Nice ranked win for Kaiden to bounce back off losses to the Nos. 1 and 2 wrestlers in the country last week.

Biggest Positive: Derek White pinning guys

White picked up the first fall of his college career in the Bedlam dual earlier this season. He now has a total of six on the season. One struggle for OSU in recent years has been bonus points. It’s clear Derek has developed from a heavyweight, with a lower weight style that racks up takedowns, to a guy that can pin people. Those bonus points are big and will mean a lot for the team at the NCAA tournament.

Most Intriguing: Wyatt Sheets win at 157

John Smith has said they’re still sorting out who will be the starter at 157 and that Wyatt Sheets, Andrew Shomers, and Jonce Blaylock are all contenders for the job. We’ve seen a lot of Blaylock and Shomers, but this is the first time out in a dual for Sheets and he looked pretty good while Shomers dropped the only match of the dual up at 165. This weight still seems to lack some clarity as to who will be the guy going forward. One other note on Sheets is John Smith recently mentioned he may be getting a medical redshirt and an extra year of eligibility.

Up Next: The Cowboys take on a much tougher Pittsburgh squad Saturday at noon in a battle of unbeaten teams.
