In part of my previews for this Bedlam dual, I wrote that this Bedlam could be a close one. There were a number of toss-up type matches that could go either way, and if things tipped in OU’s direction, the Sooners might have a shot at the upset.

Oklahoma State won most of the close matches, and the Cowboys were able to distance themselves from the Sooners in the upper weights and go onto win the dual 24-10.

John Smith was proud of the Cowboys performance late in their matches.

“We won third periods, and that was important,” he said.

At 125, true freshman Trevor Mastrogiovanni stepped out vs. senior Mason Naifeh and picked up an 8-2 decision.

Reece Witcraft was one of the guys Smith singled out as a winner of the third period. Witcraft battled back after giving up an early takedown to Anthony Madrigal. Madrigal was still in it with about 30 seconds left when Witcraft had a 5-4 lead. Witcraft picked up a takedown to win 7-4.

OU and OSU traded wins at 141 and 149, and then came one of the more exciting matches of the dual. Wyatt Sheets and Justin Thomas went to ride-outs where Sheets rode out Thomas in his period. Then Sheets immediately got a reversal, and Thomas got an escape and a takedown to win 4-3.

OSU rattled off four straight from 165 to 197 starting with a tech fall by Travis Wittlake. Dakota Geer was dominant, and freshmen Dustin Plott and AJ Ferrari picked up what most would consider their highest profile wins of the season.

Plott was up 5-4 on Anthony Mantanona before blowing the match wide open in the third and winning 11-6. AJ Ferrari used one early takedown to best Jake Woodley 3-2.

In the final bout of the dual, Austin Harris fell in overtime to Josh Heindselman to end in a final score of 24-10.

The Cowboys wrestle Little Rock on Sunday night in Gallagher-Iba.
