Cowboys Nearly Sweep Big 12 Weekly Awards After Upset Win Against Oregon

The OSU logo was littered all throughout the Big 12’s weekly honors.

In the fallout of Oklahoma State’s 39-31 win against No. 6 Oregon, the Cowboys picked up the Big 12’s Offensive Line of the Week and Defensive Line of the Week, while Drew Mestemaker was named an Offensive Player of the Week, Ethan Wesloski was named a Defensive Player of the Week and Sam Keltner was named a Special Teams Player of the Week.

The only Big 12 Weekly Award the Cowboys didn’t get in on was the league’s Freshman of the Week.

Mestemaker’s performance was star-making both within the conference and even nationwide, as he also was included in the Davey O’Brien Award Great 8, he was named a Manning Award Star of the Week and was the Burlsworth Trophy Walk-On of the Week winner.

Mestemaker did a little bit of everything for the Cowboys in his Boone Pickens Stadium debut, starting with a 75-yard run on OSU’s first play from scrimmage.

He finished having completed 60% of his 43 pass attempts for 317 yards, two touchdowns and two tipped interceptions. Then he also turned in a career-high 109 rushing yards and an acrobatic touchdown that turned into a national highlight.

A linebacker, Wesloski led the Pokes in tackles during the upset win, bringing down nine Ducks. He was also credited with a half sack and a pass breakup. Through two games, Wesloski leads the Cowboys with 16 total tackles.

With all the highlight reel plays happening around him, Keltner – the Cowboys’ kicker – was somewhat of an unsung hero. He was 4-for-4 on field goals, with three of those coming in the second half. Keltner, a transfer from SMU with familial ties to OSU, hit from 20 yards, 24 yards, 44 yards and 31 yards against the Ducks.

As for the lines, it was perhaps the most surprising aspect of this game. Even Oregon coach Dan Lanning noted that his mighty Ducks didn’t win either line of scrimmage.

Offensively, the Cowboys rushed for 237 yards and two touchdowns on 5.9 yards a carry against Oregon. Mestemaker also finished the game without having been sacked.

Then defensively, the Cowboys sacked potential No. 1 pick Dante Moore four times and held the Ducks’ rushing attack to 90 yards on 30 carries (3.0 yards per).

The Cowboys return to action at 6 p.m. Saturday when they host FCS Murray State.
