The NCAA Tournament hasn’t even started yet, and the Cowgirls are already winning.

Amari Whiting, a 5-foot-10 BYU transfer, announced that she committed to Oklahoma State on Wednesday. Whiting just finished up her sophomore season with the Cougars, where she averaged 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.8 assists and two steals a game. She started all 63 games she’s played in during the past two seasons at BYU.

“Amari is the perfect fit for us in every way possible and we are thrilled to have her and her family on board,” said OSU coach Jacie Hoyt in OSU’s release. “Her intangibles are special! She is a coach’s kid, so she has a deeper understanding of the game than most. She is gritty and she is hungry to win. Offensively, she will fit seamlessly into our ball screen motion. She will also allow us to continue to play an up-tempo style because she can play both on and off the ball.

“I believe she is one of the best on-ball defenders in the Big 12, who will be a great leader for us and take us to another level defensively.”

Basketball runs in the Whiting family’s blood. Amari’s mother, Amber, was BYU’s coach for the past three seasons. Amari’s father, Trent, played at Utah and BYU before playing a dozen years professionally in Italy. Amari lived in Italy for nine of those years. Then Jace Whiting, Amari’s brother, played two seasons at Boise State before transferring to UNLV ahead of this season.

Whiting made an instant impact with the Cougars, averaging 10.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists a game as a freshman in 2023-24. She had a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double that season against Idaho State and finished a rebound shy of a double-double on two other occasions. She’s a triple-double threat, as she was also an assist shy of a double-double on two other occasions. In a game against Baylor during her freshman season, Whiting had 14 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. It would’ve been the first triple-double in program history.

She scored in the 20s twice this past season, putting up a career-high 24 against Kansas. She had 20 in a win against Houston and had an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double against Idaho State.

Whiting is from Boise, Idaho, where she was the state’s Gatorade Player of the Year in 2022.

The Cowgirls are set to play South Dakota State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at 2:30 p.m. (CT) Saturday in Storrs, Connecticut. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
