Cox: My Favorite Play from Each Season in the Mike Gundy Era

Reliving my favorite moments from the last 15 years.

Have we all lost it yet? If you’re like me and the vigorous laps around your home aren’t quite filling that sports void, than allow me to offer a brief reprieve.

I don’t know when (or if) we will see Oklahoma State football this season in 2020. So I dug into the archive of the last 15 years for the top 15 plays, one from each year. Here is a list of my favorite play from each season of Mike Gundy’s illustrious tenure.

2005: Mike Hamilton’s 83-Yard TD over Tech

Hamilton broke the OSU freshman rushing record (961 yards) and picked up 83 of them on this one play. It was his first collegiate score and helped secure Mike Gundy’s first Big 12 win.

2006: Dantrell Savage Sends Bama Packing

Dantrell Savage was a beast.

Savage ended the day with 119 rushing yards and a score and three catches for 41 more including this one that put the Cowboys in field goal range setting up the eventual game-winner. OSU holds the all-time edge over Alabama 1-0 thanks in large part to this play.

2007: Brandon Pettigrew’s Game-Winner against Tech

You forget how much talent Gundy’s third team boasted. Zac. Adarius. Dez. Perrish. Keith Toston. Jacob Lacey. The list goes on. But one of Gundy’s personal favorite pupils earns the spotlight with this game-winner that helped wash some of that Troy loss taste out of all of our mouths.

2008: Dez’s 78-Yard Punt Return against Texas A&M

Dez in a crowd was just as dangerous as Dez in space.

I’m a sucker for return TDs, especially when they seemingly develop out of nowhere. The Cowboys walloped A&M 56-28 to start Big 12 play and to earn their first win in the series in five tries.

2009: The First Weeden2Blackmon TD

There were plenty of memorable plays this season but how could I not go with the first of many TD connections between OSU’s ? QB and its ? WR?

2010: The Tip Drill in Bedlam

This goes down as one of the most memorable single plays in OSU history. Unfortunately it didn’t end in a Cowboy victory.

2011: Jamie Blatnick’s Near Scoop-and-Score Against OU

This play will be a cherished memory for many of us for a long time. In this instance the opponent matters, the end result matters and the ensuing Big 12 title matters.

After Alex Elkins forced a Landry Jones fumble (one of my favorite Bedlam staples), Jamie Blatnick was in the right place at the right time and made the play. No amount of replay footage or reason will convince me that 50 didn’t score.

2012: Joe Randle Lays Out a Longhorn

The Cowboys came up just short against Texas this year, but Joseph Randle made the Longhorns defense wish it had never showed up after punishing it for a career-high 199 yards and two scores.

2013: 95-Yard Punt Return

As someone pointed out recently on Twitter, Josh Stewart was way ahead of the curve when it comes to social distancing.

2014: Tyreek’s Return in Bedlam

This one needs no explanation.

2015: Rudolph Deep Ball to Washington against TCU

Remember how fun the 2015 season was (for the first 10 games)? The Cardiac Cowboys eked their way to an 8-0 start before hosting No. 5 TCU. They then proceeded to blow the doors off the visiting Frogs.

In just one of the pair’s deep TD plays on the day, Mason Rudolph laid out a perfect deep ball to James Washington in stride. The crowd, the reaction, the all-time Gus Johnson call. What’s not to love?

2016: Rudolph2Washington to Break the Wildcats’ Back

Another Rudy-Wash deep ball. This time the Cowboys found themselves in hole late on the road. But when you have a dynamic duo like these two, all it takes is one play.

This TD tied things up and set up the comeback win over K-State. Great play. Great memory. Leaving James Washington single covered on the outside still not a great idea.

2017: When Marcell Mossed Tech

Ask me 10 times for my favorite play from this season and I’ll probably come up with 10 different answers. The 2017 team may have not lived up to its ceiling, but it provided us with plenty of highlight-reel plays.

I’ll go with one that might not be at the top of everyone’s list but it’s one of my favorite plays by an underrated receiver.

The catch, unreal. The impact, unmeasurable. This third-down conversion extended a late Cowboy drive in a game OSU very well could have lost in Lubbock.

2018: Tyron Throws Up the X in Norman

I always remember this game for its dramatic finish but it was an all-timer from the opening kick. There was the 49-yard TD to Tylan Wallace, some heroics by Chuba Hubbard and Tyron’s own hurdle of Sooner corner Tre Brown. But I had to go with this slick pass and grab, complete with the homage paid to another former #Freak.

2019: Tylan’s Stiff Arm against Iowa State

Sadly, this occurred in Tylan’s final game of the season, but he left one hell of an impression. Hopefully we get to see more of this sooner rather than later.
