Cut by Chargers, Tyron Johnson Finds New Home With Jaguars

Tyron Johnson was cut by the Los Angeles Chargers on Tuesday as the team made cuts to get to the final 53-man roster. He has a new home less than 24 hours later as the Jacksonville Jaguars, who had priority on waivers, used it to go get the former OSU standout, according to the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Johnson was expected by many to make the Chargers roster after an underrated 2020 season with the team. He began the year on the practice squad but went on to finish with 396 yards receiving on 20 receptions, posting a 19.9 average yards-per-catch that ranked first on the team as he solidified his standing in the league as a promising young talent with deep threat potential.

While getting cut was a surprise, Jacksonville figures to be a promising place for Johnson if he’s able to stick. The team drafted QB Trevor Lawrence with its No. 1 pick earlier this year and does not have a star-studded receiving corps., which could allow him to carve out a similar role this season. Lawrence has been viewed as one of the best QB prospects since Andrew Luck, and he helped Clemson win a title in 2018 as a true freshman while leading them to two other playoff berths in 2019 and 2020.

Johnson came to Oklahoma State after spending his freshman season at LSU. In two seasons with the Cowboys, Johnson made 71 receptions for 1,138 yards and 10 touchdowns. He put up four 100-yard receiving performances as a Cowboy, two of which came against Bedlam rival OU. In two games against the Sooners, Johnson had 15 catches for 246 yards and three touchdowns.

Johnson went undrafted in 2019 bouncing around the Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills and Carolina Panthers before finding a home with the Chargers last season.
