Why would Joe Bob Clements not be calling defensive plays in the bowl game?

Maybe there’s another more apparent internal candidate but it feels like a free spin on a potential coordinator replacement. Reportedly Clements will be very involved with the process. Feels like the “Kasey Dunn is calling plays while the OC is stuck in the elevator” moment.

• A Chicago outlet did a piece on Cowboy assistant coach (and former White Sox manager) Robin Ventura

Jaylen Warren is “100%” entering the Fiesta Bowl – it will always be a great mystery to me how he was healthy enough to play Tech and Bedlam but not the Big 12 title game

Side note – the non-playoff bowl games have to figure out NIL opportunities to get the stars into these games:

• This is interesting – right after Cowboy Basketball announced on Monday that they’re shutting down basketball for a time, Mike Gundy made a comment about some of his players’ availability:

Hours before that grim announcement, OSU football coach Mike Gundy said “a few” of his players had contracted COVID-19 “over the last few days.”

• Breaking down the Big 12’s new COVID-19 Basketball Policies

• A starting cornerback for Notre Dame is questionable for the game

• It’s fun to hear/look back on the closing of Malcolm Rodriguez’s recruitment:

• Pretty cool – Collin Oliver named a finalist for the Freshman of the Year in college football:

This is something (as a fan who has never been a D-1 athlete) hard for me to understand: when a player transfers out, doesn’t it feel like they’re abandoning their team a bit? By no means am I saying it’s inappropriate and that they don’t have every right to.

When an adult leaves a job for more money/better opportunities, it’s understandable but as a left-behind coworker, it feels a little raw. I would assume after years of running stadiums, competing, living, and traveling together, it’s a little different than the 9am-5pm relationship.

Kolby Harvell-Peel voiced support for his teammates in the transfer portal:

“I just support them in whatever decision they are going to make,” Harvell-Peel said Tuesday. “They are my brothers before they are my teammates. For whatever reason they want to be in the portal, I’m going to support whatever decision they make…

“If they happen to leave, I am going to enjoy my time with them while they are here.”

It seems like there’s probably more there that an athlete can’t communicate.

I always wonder how to follow up with someone effectively via email – HBR had a solid take here:

Start with a compelling subject line. Avoid generic phrases like “Following up” or “Checking in” that are not only vague, they may also make the recipient feel bad for being slow to respond (even further delaying a reply). Instead, be more specific, for example, “Next steps on X project” or “Question on job application.”

Next, be mindful of your tone. Research shows emails that are slightly to moderately positive in tone have a 10 to 15% higher response rate than more neutral messages. So aim to be friendly and polite.

Finally, be succinct and specific about your ask — and offer your recipient an easy out. This will give them an opportunity to save face and preserve the relationship. If you do all this and you still don’t get a response, be judicious about following up again.
