Daily Bullets (July 17): Big 12 Media Days Wraps Up

Published

As the week rolls on, we continue to digest a plethora of information that came out of Big 12 Media Days.

• Horns down
• Another QB competition: Weeden or Rudolph?

OSU Bullets

• I’m convinced of it. Mike Gundy reads this blog.

“It has to be (measured by) points per possession,” Gundy said. “(At Army), they did a fantastic job of coaching, but you can’t compare their defensive coordinator’s points-allowed to the coordinators in our league. Army’s defense is on the field for nine possessions a game. Our guys are out there 14, 15 or maybe 16 a game. If you go by (points per possession), you’re going to get a fair statistic.” [NewsOK]

• Jenni Carlson outlined well something a lot of us have been thinking about the QB race.

Gundy regularly references how a quarterback reaches a different level of understanding and comfort once he plays in 15 games. Think about the impact next season and beyond if Sanders has that kind of experience.

“People say if all things are equal, you just play the young guy,” Gundy said. “I don’t think we’ll do that. If all things are equal, we’ll play both guys. Dru came all the way across the country to be a part of our organization, so we owe him the opportunity.” [NewsOK]

• A.J. Green does not want to hear about any other Big 12 receivers you have ahead of Tylan Wallace.

“It’s absurd, I think,” Green said Monday at Big 12 Media Day. “It’s not like he’s doing it with no TV coverage and nobody can watch. Everybody sees what he’s doing, against good opponents. Even sometimes against double coverage. I don’t know what to say.” [PFB]

• In the question of who is best OSU quarterback, who you got? No. 2 or No. 3?

I spent three years of Mason’s career hollering about how good he was, but even I can admit this … Weeden was (at least a little and maybe a lot) better as a quarterback for OSU. [PFB]

Gundy on OU: “Somebody’s got to take it from them.”

A two-QB system may not look like you’d expect.

• Big 12 coordinator of officials Greg Burke was asked about the ‘Horns down celebration that became a topic of conversation last year and how it would be officiated this fall. He didn’t exactly put the issue to bed.

Burke offered up three words in his vague explanation for how the gesture will be ruled: “it depends” and “probably.” Based on his comments, it seems interpretation of the gesture will be heavily subjected to the discretion of whomever is officiating on the field. In other words: not much is changing here, so we’ll likely continue to see more of it in the future. [CBS Sports]

“It’s like any unsportsmanlike act. If somebody scores quickly, turns to their cheering section, and it’s quick and they move on, we’re not going to do anything with that. If it’s to a bench or to another player, and it’s prolonged, it would be an unsportsmanlike act.” [Tulsa World]

• Berry Tramel on soaring expectations for Matt Campbell and Iowa State.

Campbell is a smart guy. He’s beyond smart. He knows the expectations are a result of a hungry fan base and hard work and quality results. Campbell said when he first got to Ames, fans wanted to talk about the color of uniforms and the entrance music. You know. The stuff that doesn’t matter. [NewsOK]

• Bill Haisten says Day 2 of Big 12 MD had a “Texas is back” vibe to it.

This year, Herman has a 20-start veteran at quarterback — All-Big 12 selection Sam Ehlinger — and likely enters the season with a national top-10 ranking.

During Day 2 of the Big 12 Media Days event, a strong “Texas is back” vibe could be felt all over AT&T Stadium. If that vibe is sustained after the Longhorns host LSU on Sept. 7, the Oct. 12 OU-Texas game could be an epic match of top-five teams. [Tulsa World]
