Daily Bullets (Mar. 22): Most Likely (Two) Succeed Tyron Johnson

Published

on

Spring Break starts to wrap up in Oklahoma today – enjoy missing your last work day or parking wherever you’d like if you’ve been at the office like me.

Bullets Rundown

• Most likely to succeed Tyron Johnson
• Announcers = underrate gameday aspect
• Can Curtis Jones pop in 2019-2020?

Scores

• Cowgirl Golf: Cowgirls lead in Hawaii through day one.

OSU Bullets

• If you’re looking for who is most likely (two) succeed Tyron Johnson as the number two receiver:

C.J. Moore: With Tyron gone I think you could argue that Moore has the most raw talent of anybody on this team. I wouldn’t argue it — because Chuba Hubbard is still listed as a player on okstate dot com — but you could.

He also probably had more to gain from Robert Glass in this offseason than anyone else on the roster given that he looked like a 2-iron coming into college. If he gets the Justice Hill and Chuba Hubbard offseason transformation, OSU might have itself a new No. 2 WR for 2019. [PFB]

You can pick any guy from the crowd (I’ll hear L.C. Greenwood, Braydon Johnson, and Patrick McKaufman) but Moore has such a pedigree that it’s hard to not cast your vote in his direction.

Arena announcers may be one of the most underrated aspects of a gameday environment.

“I grew up listening to Larry Clark at Tulsa and Larry Reece at OSU,” (Jared) Gallagher said. “When you go to sporting events that have iconic voices that are there for years and decades at a time, that voice becomes synonymous with those programs and those sports. I always thought that was really cool.” [TulsaWorld]

When Cowboy alum Jared Gallagher announces for the Big Dance in Tulsa – is it possible the eventual successor of Cowboy legend Larry Reece is being groomed?

• From the guys already on campus, I’m most interested to see how Curtis Jones develops.

But the development of guard Curtis Jones should be interesting this offseason. He averaged 8.1 ppg in 23 contests. He had the third-most attempts from the 3-point line behind Dziagwa and Waters. If he can improve on his 32.5 percent shooting, he can be a more consistent factor in this offense.  [HCS]

As you move into your last year – you’re ideally making mature decisions and leaving it all on the floor. Jones will finish after his third year in Stillwater, plenty of time to improve and top out.

• Enjoyed this interview with Sean Sutton – especially his remarks about the touching moment between Eddie-Kelvin Sampson in Stillwater and talking about details around #PutEddieIn.

• This may be my favorite NCAA tourney tweet thus far (given Yale’s involvement in recent admission scandals).

Chuba will have a clear path to the top now with the two guys in front of him headed to the NFL.

• Boone lists his winners and losers from day one of the tournament.

Non-OSU Bullets

• The biggest side effect of dropping Facebook: less targeted ads.

• This on Mike Trout and not worrying about your online presence was thought-provoking:

I got in some hot water a few years ago for writing a New York Times op-ed in which I argued that young people needed to spend less energy desperately trying to build their online presence, and more energy quietly developing unambiguously valuable skills. (I even wrote a book about this.)

Trout represents this philosophy pushed to an extreme. When you average 9.0 WAR over six seasons, you don’t have to worry about your Instagram followers.

Trout’s talent, of course, approaches mythological levels, which made his commitment to fundamentals a safe bet. But as with any good myth, it conveys a deeper truth. [Cal Newport]

What a fine line this is – developing your presence and focusing on building your competency at what you do. The wrench in the argument may be if your hustle, your vocation involves online presence but it’s a valid question.
