James Washington, Redneck

This James Washington story is amazing.

Washington often feels most at home in the cover of brush on a west Texas hillside, a rifle tucked between the crease of his chin and his right shoulder. Coyote hunting is open season year round here, and on weekends when Washington isn’t lighting up Big 12 defenses, his aim typically turns toward varmints that roam vast open spaces near his tiny hometown of Stamford. Shooting coyotes is a conservation method that helps maintain healthy wildlife populations of all kinds in farming communities under the West Texas sunlight.

Washington loves the adrenaline rush. “It means a lot to me,” he said. “It’s definitely a time for me to go home and kind of unwind with my friends and family. I enjoy every minute of it.” Said quarterback Mason Rudolph: “He’s got some redneck in him.” [NewsOK]

Hahahaha.

Pokes Focused On Run D

John Helsley on what Oklahoma State has to do on defense to stop OU.

Of course, with the Sooners, there’s cause for concern defending both the pass and the run. OU ranks No. 10 nationally in passing offense, No. 25 in rushing offense and No. 3 in total offense, with Sooners offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley pulling the strings effectively. “I know Coach Riley does a tremendous job,” said Cowboys defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer. “If you take something away, he’s going to figure out pretty quickly something else to come up with. I’ve got a lot of respect for him as a play caller.” [NewsOK]

I agree with this. Focus on Dede all you want, but Perine and Mixon are OU’s bread and butter. End them and you have at least a chance. Also, this.

Helfrich, Gone

I’m here for all the coaching searches.

Helfrich had a 37-16 record in four seasons, including a national title game appearance in 2014. But he was 13-12 following Heisman winner Marcus Mariota’s departure, and the defense declined precipitously following coordinator Nick Aliotti’s retirement following the 2013 season. This year’s Ducks, who finished 4-8, allowed 49.2 points in their seven conference losses. [247]

Is it bad that my first thought on hearing this news was, “that’s a lot of sweet gear he’s giving up”? Probably bad. Lincoln Riley might be a candidate. Hopefully this man is too.

CFB Playoff from 4 to 8

I want this.

College football has always been faced with a tricky question: What is the fairest way to decide a national champion without devaluing the most meaningful regular season in sports? The stakes are so high every week for national contenders, from September though November. Any postseason needs to be designed with that in mind, because nobody wants to fundamentally alter what people love about the sport. But while a four-team playoff preserves the regular season, it has always been set up to fail, with five major conferences vying for four spots. When someone is left unsatisfied too often, change becomes inevitable. Like it or not, expansion from four teams to eight teams is going to happen. [Sports On Earth]

Have mercy, Bedlam for the Big 12 and the right to play Clemson. Wow. The best part about an eight-team playoff featuring conference champions and a non-Power 5 team is that the regular season still means everything because you don’t know what everyone else is going to do. Ohio State might have needed to win the Michigan game just to get in because it didn’t play for its conference title. That’s important.

Joe Mixon, not injured

Just stop.

New threads for OSU Hoops

Brad Underwood and Co. are busting out the turquoise Native American jerseys tonight that Carson loves so much.

Now [Lindy] Waters, and his teammates, can put the uniforms on full display Wednesday night when the Cowboys take on Rogers State at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Tip time is 7 p.m.

“I’ve really embraced my culture all my life,” said Waters, whose given name “Pao” means Three in the Kiowa language. “And I love that they’re having games like this and we’re getting jerseys and I get to showcase my culture. [NewsOK]

This week, by the way, is bonkers. Bedlam plus two basketball games with a team we’re actually excited about? Somebody get me a COOP.

The Tyreek Backlash

You knew it was coming.

That said, there is a difference between giving someone a second chance, and promoting that person on the league’s account. There is a large chasm between those two things, and just because Tyreek Hill scored some touchdowns, he’s now on the “cover,” so to speak, in this modern social media world.

Hill’s domestic assault, to which he reached a plea agreement and is currently serving three years’ probation, happened the same year as Greg Hardy. Let that sink in. Hardy is now a pariah, after getting a chance last year with Dallas. Hill is getting his second chance, and neither you nor I know if that will ultimately prove merited or not. [Big Lead]

I’ve already given my thoughts on the Freek, but yeah, this is not a great look by the NFL although I’m not sure how you keep up with the morality of every individual’s life and only promote the “good ones.” Seems like a slippery slope.

Superfan Micah

This on how Frank Martin once consoled Micah after a loss is terrific.

It’s not only the team that gets to experience these talks. After a Cowboys loss, Micah will talk to anybody within earshot about it. One evening, Kansas State coach Frank Martin happened to be on the receiving end of one of those rants. The Cowboys had lost to the Wildcats, and Micah was going through the postgame emotions that come with a loss. Martin listened as Micah vented his frustrations and, when he was done, wrapped his arm around him. “Hey, it was just our night,” Martin said. “Your team’s really good. You’re gonna win a lot of games.” [O’Colly]

Another great story by Chandler Vessels. Proud of him and glad to have had him as a contributor for PFB at one point.

Defensive Line Comparisons

These stats stunned me.

Oklahoma’s defensive line has combined for just 8.5 sacks this season, while the linebackers, led by Obo Okoronkwo, have 13.5. By comparison, OSU’s defensive line has 23 sacks. [Tulsa World]

Bedlam History

Bill Haisten on Gundy and history.

Oklahoma State takes a hot team and its coach takes a 2-9 Bedlam record to Norman, bracing for a collision with an archrival that rarely loses at home. The schools disagree on the series standing. OU claims it has an 85-18-7 advantage. OSU has it at 84-19-7. Either way, everyone can agree that Bedlam has been lopsided. However, if Gundy can win again on Owen Field and watch his players hoist the Big 12 trophy, the satisfaction would be immeasurable. The moment would overwhelm the history. [Tulsa World]

It wouldn’t be as important for OSU as 2011, but it wouldn’t be that far behind it either.

More PFB

Sterns says Bedlam is us vs. the world … Pokes still No. 10 in CFB Playoff rankings … If you’re not excited for Bedlam yet, this will get you excited … Baker likes Gundy’s mullet … are we forgetting what a healthy Rudolph brings to the table? … Mike Gundy has one goal … OU’s defense is one of the worst Stoops has ever had … What’s been accomplished at OSU in the last decade is nationally impressive.
