Daily Bullets (Oct 20) – When to Play Sanders, Boynton on the Coming Season

Looking Into the Crystal Ball

When considering a freshman quarterback, it’s easy to overlook when would be best for them to play in their freshman year.

I’ve been saying this for the past two weeks, but it feels so blatant to me that Sanders is going to be great and that in two years we’re going to talk about Cornelius-Sanders like we talk about Garman-Rudolph and Cate-Weeden.

That might not be the case — and Gundy gets a little bit of a bad rap when the reality is that Sanders probably wasn’t ready in Week 1 or Week 4. One source I talked to last weekend said that the discussion around No. 3 was the same as it was around Rudolph when he was a true freshman. Not ready early. Not ready in the middle. Probably ready late. [PFB]

Lunt played too early – Rudolph played on time. Bobby Reid was highly touted but didn’t perform up to expectations, Weeden wasn’t so much under the radar as not even considered an option. Not only do you have to pick the right guy but you have to play him at the right time.

A Culture Fit

After years of Ford-purgatory and being two-timed by Underwood, Mike Boynton continues to be a breath of fresh air.

This season, Boynton has a different set of challenges. The 36-year-old rising star has nine newcomers and only three returnees who played significant minutes. One of those newcomers, Michael Weathers, has been charged with grand larceny, and the school has suspended him indefinitely as he awaits a court date.

Boynton is unaffected by it all because he sees his job as an opportunity to mold young men more than anything else. He said while every season is new and the faces change, his purpose doesn’t change.

“It’s only different in terms of it being a different group of guys,” he said. “For me, the job remains the same. I’ve tried to approach it exactly as I did last year in terms of, my job is to come out here every day and be a teacher. To try to educate these kids the same way they’re educated in their English classes or their algebra classes or whatever it is, but as it relates to basketball.” [The Washington Post]

I’m not sure a coach with a different perspective (and these rosters) would fare half as well as Boynton has/will.

OSU and NCAA Notes

Haisten wrote a great piece detailing the end of Barry Sanders career – and what might have been….20 best CFB quarterbacks in 20 years….11 teams that could make a Cinderella run in the Big Dance (don’t sleep on No. 6)….OSU is selling between 2k and 5k beers at each home game….OU-Texas in the Big 12 title could be a preview of changes for the Red River Rivalry game

Sort of a stretch but the sequence of events that leads to Spencer Sanders starting led to TC starting was wild.

Fran’s in the Likekele fan club.

A day in the life of Coach Bro – pretty wild.

Fall in Stillwater’s a wonderful time.

Pretty impressive numbers from the former Cowboy.
