Brad Underwood on the Texas loss

It was ugly.

“That forced us tonight to have to play lineups I’ve never thought about putting on the court, to be quite honest,” OSU coach Brad Underwood said. “Just inexcusable on our part, 15-0 run and it was all layups in transition,” Underwood said. “Some bad shots on our end led to that but just not getting back.” [Tulsa World]

I’m willing to give any coach 3+ years to at least point the thing in the right direction so I’m not going to get all animated after one loss to a bad team, but I do hate that we’re going to waste one of Jawun’s two Stillwater seasons on a NCAA Tournament bubble performance.

Alamo Bowl full

Interesting note on the CU-OSU game.

Luckily for the Alamo Bowl, they didn’t have much of a problem selling tickets. Oklahoma State and Colorado filled up 59,815 of the 65,000 seats at the Alamodome in San Antonio. That 92 percent attendance rate was good enough to finish at No. 9. [CRFF]

As it should be. It was one of the 10 best bowls going in and probably one of the eight best.

Berry Goes In On Playoff Committee

Whoo boy.

The committee fell victim to what has plagued college football literally since Princeton and Rutgers kicked off this madness with an 1869 game. The committee relied on what it thought. Not what it knew. Big difference. Really big difference. The poll nature of college football has fostered a century-long culture of opinion-making that doesn’t exist in other sports. [NewsOK]

He’s not really wrong either.

Falling Attendance

OKC Dave sent me this week-long series on what’s wrong with college football. It’s compelling. Attendance continues to drop across the board as costs continue to rise. It won’t matter in five or 10 years, but it might in 25.

No school has seen students and fans turn their backs on football quite like Kansas. The Jayhawks averaged more than 50,000 people per game in 2009. Since then, attendance has dropped every year, to 25,828 this season, the worst among the so-called “Power Five” schools. Kansas once earned $9.2 million selling football tickets. In 2014, the most recent data available, the school made less $4 million. [Bloomberg]
