Discussions About How a Two-QB System at OSU Will Work Have Already Begun

It’s more and more likely we see two quarterbacks … at least to start the season.

STILLWATER — Preliminary discussions on how a Dru Brown/Spencer Sanders two-quarterback system in Corvallis would work are being had in the offices of the west end zone at Boone Pickens Stadium.

After Oklahoma State’s practice on Tuesday, OSU coach Mike Gundy again said if the Cowboys played this week, both quarterbacks would play. But 10 days out from Game 1, Gundy said no decision has been made on how exactly it would look.

“We don’t have to make that decision until next week,” Gundy said. “The discussion has taken place, but we’re not sure yet. We’re still evaluating and trying to do what’s best.”

Gundy said the discussion of keeping a hot hand in vs. splitting snaps up incrementally (series or quarters) has also taken place, but Gundy said the staff isn’t sure what would happen yet.

It’s beginning to look more and more like the Clint Chelf/J.W. Walsh quarterback race of 2013 as the days get closer to the season opener. In the Cowboys first game that season, Chelf, the elder of the two, started the game, but after two meh series, Walsh came in and finished the game. That game was also away from home against a Power Five nonconference foe, Mississippi State.

That game didn’t end the race, though, as Chelf finished the year having started eight games to Walsh’s five. OSU fans would probably take the result of that season, though, as the Pokes finished the year with 10 wins.

Although it’s looking more likely to be a Sanders/Brown double team against the Beavers, Gundy said there is still a chance one guy wins the job in the next 10 days.

“Maybe somebody takes the thing over in the next three practices and makes it really clear cut,” Gundy said. “Both guys, now, are playing well enough for us to win in my opinion. But until one of them clearly says or shows that he’s better than the other, both guys deserve to play.”

Neither quarterback was made available for comment.
