Mike Boynton brought Doug home, sort of.

Doug Gottlieb has been assisting Boynton’s Oklahoma State staff as a consultant this season. Gottlieb played three seasons at Oklahoma State (1997-00), where he became the program’s all-time leader in assists with 793 — 248 assists ahead of second-place Byron Eaton. In his Cowboy career, Gottlieb averaged 5.1 points and 7.6 assists a game.

Gottlieb’s role isn’t overly official. Boynton said Gottlieb comes in on about a monthly basis, sits in on meetings, watches practice and gives feedback. It’s not an entirely new ordeal, either, as Gottlieb has been working with Boynton and his staff all season.

“Doug and I have become good friends over the years,” Boynton said. “We’ve always shared ideas. Obviously he loves this place, loves this program. I thought that he could lend some external support to our staff. So, for the last four or five months, he comes in for a couple days monthly, about — sometimes more, sometimes less — and just sits in our meetings, watches practices and sends me thoughts, and we talk on the phone occasionally about what he sees.

“He doesn’t have a position. He’s not on staff, but he is consulting me and the staff a little bit and trying to give us some ideas about things as a — I don’t wanna say neutral because he wants to see us win — but as an outside observer that’s really, really knowledgeable about the game.”

Since his playing days ended, Gottlieb, 48, has been on the media side of things, primarily in radio. The Doug Gottlieb Show airs Monday through Friday on FOX Sports Radio and has since 2017. Prior to being partnered with FOX, the show also aired on ESPN and CBS Sports Radio.

Although it might be easy to question why a talk show host is also a consultant for a high-major basketball team, coaching runs in the Gottlieb family, and Gottlieb obviously has a mind for the sport. Bob Gottlieb, Doug’s father, coached at Jacksonville and Milwaukee in the 70s and early 80s. Gregg Gottlieb, Doug’s brother, is an assistant coach for the San Diego State women’s team and has spent time on men’s staffs at Oregon State, Cal, San Diego State, Sacramento State and Cal Poly.

Doug is familiar with the space, as well. This isn’t the first time Gottlieb has been a consultant, as he has consulted with Texas, Texas Tech and Baylor in recent seasons. He coaches and runs an AAU program — Branch West. He also helped lead Team USA to a gold medal at the 2017 Maccabiah Games, an international Jewish and Israeli multi-sport event held in Israel every four years. He coached in the Maccabiah Games games in 2009 alongside Bruce Pearl. Gottlieb more recently coached the Stillwater Stars, an OSU-alum based TBT team, in 2021. He has also coached Team 23 in TBT.
