STILLWATER — Eric Morris locked up what should be the foundation of Oklahoma State’s immediate future with a commitment from North Texas quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who led the nation in passing yards with 4,379 this season, putting him 406 yards ahead of runner-up Darian Mensah (Duke).

To say this might be a home run could actually be an understatement, considering where major portal services rank the UNT quarterback.

On3 ranks him third overall and first among passers. 247Sports ranks Mestemaker second overall and among quarterbacks. ESPN is the lowest, ranking him all the way down at sixth and third among passers.

ESPN talent evaluator Tom Luginbill broke down Mestemaker’s tape.

“Mestemaker’s control of the offense and poise are notable considering he was his high school’s backup quarterback,” Luginbill said. “He gets the ball out on time when his first option is there, and he gets through his progressions when his first option isn’t there. He puts good touch on his downfield passes. He keeps his eyes up, and he makes accurate throws as he climbs the pocket. Mestemaker has quirky mechanics and delivery, but the end result is positive. He has played in a very QB-friendly scheme at North Texas and is not a runner.”

If Mestemaker lives up to the hype, then Morris’ first season in Stillwater might be about a lot more than getting the Cowboys back to bowling.

Pro Football Focus graded Mestemaker out with an overall offensive grade of 86.3, which puts him fifth among quarterbacks in the transfer portal.

The only quarterback to throw more touchdown passes this season was Heisman winner Fernando Mendoza, whose current total of 36 puts him two ahead of Mestemaker.

Mestemaker finished the season averaging 9.4 yards per attempt which ranked fifth overall behind three quarterbacks with a smaller role in the passing game and Mendoza who averaged 9.5.

Mestemaker finished 14th overall in completion percentage (69%).

Despite taking 19 sacks, Mestemaker still finished with 211 rushing yards and averaged 4.7 yards per attempt. He made the most of his 26 true rushing attempts (ignoring sacks), gaining at least 10 yards nine times this season, tying him for 88th among quarterbacks in 2025.

Robert Allen, of Pokes Report, first reported on Tuesday that the UNT quarterback was set to follow his former head coach to Stillwater.

Mestemaker could be the first of many former UNT players set to follow Morris to Stillwater which would give the Cowboys a group of de facto returning players familiar with the schemes and playbooks employed by Morris on both sides of the ball.
