Drive Charts: Oklahoma State Sputters Offensively Against Tech

OSU didn’t have enough diesel in its offensive tank to keep up.

I did not want to put this together (and almost didn’t!) after Oklahoma State got hammered by Texas Tech at home, 41-17. But hey, the good drive charts are only good because bad drive charts exist, and boy were the Saturday drive charts something awful. Let’s jump right in (and then out as quickly as possible).

Oh sweet mercy. Take out one 56-yard drive, and OSU had four drives that included 15 plays for 25 yards. ???

OSU’s Pertinent Stats

• Points per drive (offense): 1.4 (taking out the punt fumble)
• Yards per play: 6.2
• Third-down conversions: 3/13 (23 percent)
• Average starting field position: own 25-yard line
• Red-zone scoring: 2/3
• Points off turnovers: 7
• Time of possession: 18:43

Oklahoma State is currently No. 59 in the country in third down conversions. The yards per play number actually wasn’t that bad on Saturday, but everything else was pretty brutal. I know we don’t care about TOP, but to not even reach 19 minutes is an eye-popper. Also, that 1.4 number is so bad.

It wasn’t an elite offensive performance from Tech, but on Saturday it didn’t really need to be. They had nine (!) drives of seven plays or more.

Tech’s Pertinent Stats

• Points per drive (offense): 3.2
• Yards per play: 6.8
• Third-down conversions: 9/14 (64 percent)
• Average starting field position: own 28-yard line
• Red-zone scoring: 6/8
• Points off turnovers: 10
• Time of possession: 41:17

Oklahoma State is currently 90th in the country in third down stops on defense.

Tech did what I would expect Tech (and most Big 12 teams) to do. They averaged just over three points per drive, which is a really good (but not insane) number. Their yards per play was about the same as OSU’s. They kept the ball for forever and sustained drive after drive. The biggest problem on Saturday is that OSU didn’t have enough diesel in its offensive tank to keep up.
