Dru Brown Named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for West Virginia Win
Another Cowboy QB wins Newcomer of the Week.
Dru Brown filled in admirably for an injured Spencer Sanders, captaining Oklahoma State to a 20-13 win over West Virginia on the road. For his efficient outing and the victory in his first OSU start, Brown was named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week for Week 13.
Brown was an efficient 22-of-29 (75.9 percent) for 196 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions. Most importantly, he managed the gameplan effectively and efficiently and didn’t make mistakes. He also started and finished the game well. Brown completed 10 of his first 11 throws and seven of his last eight.
“I was really proud of him,” said Mike Gundy after the win, “22-of-29, 200 yards passing, two TDs, and we didn’t protect for him very well in the first half. To be honest with you, he played real good. … He didn’t get over aggressive. He managed that game well. Quarterbacks that manage the game well give you a chance to win.”
Brown is just the latest in a slew of Cowboys to earn weekly conference awards and the second QB to earn Newcomer of the Week. Spencer Sanders earned it for his games against McNeese State and TCU.
Chuba Hubbard has been named Offensive Player of the Week three times, while Kolby Harvell-Peel leads the league with three Defensive Player of the Week awards. Malcolm Rodriguez also earned DPOW for his play at Iowa State.
Brown will have his work cut out for him when he lines up opposite Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts this Saturday. Hurts boasts a league-best three Newcomer of the Week honors and two Offensive Player of the Week designations.
