Evaluating the options at QB on Recruiting Trail

Published

on

The coaching staff has been busy in the recruiting trail lately with Nick Starkels decision to back off his commitment to the Pokes, and they have recently extended several offers and have other targets remaining on the board. Here’s some of the top options for the Pokes, and where they stand with the prospect with just over a month until national signing day.

Keondre Wudtee — 6-3, 170

Wudtee is a late offer from Bossier City, LA, and the definition of an under the radar find the Cowboy coaching staff has been known to uncover. Wudtee is a former Louisiana Tech commit who backed off his commitment to the school following his offer from the Pokes. He’s scheduled to make an official visit to Stillwater on Jan. 15, a huge recruiting day for the Cowboys. Based on my evaluations, Wudtee is the top target on the board. Based on his film and pure upside, you may agree with me:

Devon Modster — 6-2, 215

Modster is the most recent offer for the coaching staff. A current Arizona commit – Modster has offers from UCLA, Arizona State, Utah, Boise, California, and more. Modster is probably the more lauded talent of the group – being ranked a four-star prospect – he is a blue-chip quarterback from Rancho Santa Margarita, California. Interestingly, Modster may be keeping his options open because the Cats currently have another quarterback committed in 2016 prospect Khalil Tate.

Modster has a monster arm with excellent awareness in the pocket, and a sneaky good elusiveness when he elects to pull it down and run. I really like Modster given his upside as a passer, and his skills would fit in nicely with the system in Stillwater.

Coleman Key — 6-4, 215

Per The Oklahoman’s John Helsley, Key – a former Broken Arrow (OK) standout and Colorado State quarterback – has received a full release and is in contact with the OSU staff to discuss the potential of a landing spot in Stillwater.

Key has a full release from his school, and could reportedly enroll as early as January. He’s a very intriguing prospect, given his hometown and his experience at the Div. I level already. As it stands, next year the Cowboys will return Mason Rudolph and John Kolar as the only scholarship quarterbacks. With Key, the Cowboys could bring in a more seasoned option – but may not have the same upside as the other remaining high school prospects on the board. Per John Helsley, Key played in just six games this past season, passing for 251 yards and three touchdowns. As a senior at Broken Arrow, he passed for 2,628 yards and 29 touchdowns. He was the teammate of former OSU running back Devon Thomas – a player who ran into trouble with the law and never saw the field in his short stint in Stillwater.

January 15 will be a day to obviously keep an eye on moving forward. Several top recruits at many positions will file into Stillwater, and Keondre Wudtee is the only confirmed visitor for that weekend. If the Cowboys can make a favorable impression on his official visit, it would go a long way toward closing in on one – if not the top – target on the quarterback board.
