Final Notes and Thoughts on Oklahoma State’s Wild Win Over Dana and Friends

On Dana, Gundy and those two Tyron catches.

Whooooo boy. I’m not sure how many of these Texas-Baylor-OU-West Virginia stretches I can do. Four games, two wins, 320 points scored and the biggest winning margin was … 4 points. I pubbed the 10 Thoughts last evening, but it’s time to empty the notebook before moving on to the final regular season game (!) of 2018.

• The “Corndog is a hero for not transferring” narrative lasted the full season. Every single game. Look, Corn has been awesome the last few games. Awesome! But let’s not pretend like this was something it wasn’t all along. Maybe my least favorite national narrative since the “DID YOU KNOW MARCUS SMART AND PHIL FORTE ARE BEST PALS” storyline was trotted out ad nauseam in hoops.

• WVU’s uniforms were wold class. That helmet! From the logo on the side to the Country Roads on the back with the state as the “O.” I was swooning.

• I now president both the Landon Wolf fan club as well as the Logan Carter fan club. I am also the president of whatever club publicly and financially supports throwing this pass 10 times a game.

• I thought OSU’s coverage in the secondary was pretty great. That’s as physical as they’ve played maybe all season, especially in the second half. Also, Jackson Lavarnway (our photographer) explained to me when we were driving back from the Baylor game why he thinks Will Grier is overrated. I felt like I watched that play out on Saturday.

• A fun stat from the ABC broadcast: 81 percent of Tylan’s catches have come on first down..

• This man makes $250,000 a month.

• The first half of the first quarter was on ESPNews while Ohio State-Maryland finished up. Switching from beautiful Stillwater and what turned into an offensive shootout over to a snowy Air Force-Wyoming game was jarring.

• Bullet went at the WVU huddle!

• I feel like OSU prides itself on playing as many walk ons as possible, as if it’s a badge of honor. Like they get bonus points from the Big 12 Conference for meeting a certain threshold by the end of the year.

• All I’m saying is that there were a lot of WVU injuries during OSU offensive drives.

• I did not have “143” in the “most throws Corn will go between picks this season. Pretty impressive stuff. Of course he had another one three tosses later.

• Holgorsen chatting up A.J. Green after his hit on Gary Jennings was all the ?. YOU COACH YOUR PLAYERS AND I’LL COACH MINE!

• Possibly related: I love when Gundy is in the middle of a sideline fracas. He always looks so far out of his world. It kills me.

• I want to hear Corn’s trash talk. Please let there be audio.

• OSU’s second TD drive included Corn, Landon Wolf, LD Brown and Logan Carter and nobody else. Three walk ons and LD. They’ll probably have that on a loop in the football offices for the next 10 months! (And maybe they should!)

• Speaking of uniforms, I respect the black shoes with white socks. Bring back the Reggie Bush-era black shoes and white shoelaces please.

• This game felt a lot like the 2017 Kansas State game, except that OSU scored on the final drive instead.

• TC tried to go VY on Donovan on WVU with the pump fake. I loved it. Corn might be good, guys!

• Chuba rocks a gold chain. No wonder Gundy loves him.

• They showed Stillwater-Booker T. highlights at one point during the game. I … did not imagine Gunnar getting the best of Dax in a playoff game. I wish there had been scholarships at stake. Gunnar should have told Dax he’d walk on at Michigan and do his laundry if Booker T. won but that Dax had to flip to OSU if Stillwater won. Would have been the best recruiting a Gundy has done in years.

• Not good!

• At some point, Gundy is going to go without a punt returner. He might go without a punt return unit. Just stick the regular defense out there in punt situations and see what happens.

• A thing I was thinking about last night as WVU attempted a field goal to start the fourth quarter: It would be so hard to kick into that jumbotron.

• These two catches from Tyron were surreal. He’s a dude.

• Trevon Wesco = Javorskie Lane.

• The ref with the cameras on his head is hilarious. How pissed is the guy who draws the short straw and has to wear a hat with like eight cameras on it so those of us chilling in our parents’ basements can see if Tyron got two feet in?

• WVU ran the horns down, told OSU they were running it, OSU KNEW they were running it and it still resulted in a 41-31 lead. Incredible.

• Dillon, my man.

• What was Sills doing on that fourth down where he flew offsides? That was bizarre. WVU looked out of sorts in the fourth quarter. Like winning a ninth game on the road with the CFP looming and OU coming next week is hard to do or something.

• McDonough on Corn: “He’ll go to a NFL camp for sure.”

• The entire fourth quarter was lunacy. There were 31 points scored in the final 15 minutes, and 21 of them came from OSU. So 36 percent of the total game points were scored over the final 25 percent of the game. When that happens, especially at the end, it always feels like complete chaos.

• I may have said during the game in Slack that Tylan > James. Kyle deeply regrets his error and apologizes for the mistake, but … whispers … he might just be.
