Five Best Quotes from OSU’s 65-64 Win over Texas
The Cowboys put together a fantastic 5-plus minutes of basketball to end Saturday’s game on a 15-2 run and secure Big 12 win No. 2. We knew this was going to be hard, but man.
After the emotional win, Cowboy players and coaches met with members of the media. Here are my five favorite quotes.
Tavarius Shine on the game-winner
“I just know I was trying to get to the glass. When Yankuba grabbed the rebound, I was screaming his name. I realized he didn’t hear me because he didn’t look back. I saw him do a hook shot and when I saw it go short, I tried to get it up to the rim. I was hoping it would go in.”
Shine was then asked who he thought got the tip-in.
“I would take half credit because I know I touched the ball… I know I touched the ball, but Yankuba is 7 foot and he says he touched the ball so I’m gonna take just half credit or half of the point.”
Boynton on the stress of comebacks and his “gutless” comments following the KSU loss
“I don’t think anybody has more stress than I do,” said Boynton “but we’ll certainly take it. I’m really proud of our fight. That’s what I was talking about the past couple of days. I think my word choice kind of went a different route than what it should be, and that’s on me.
“I have to be smarter than that, but at the same time, my kids got the message and I knew they would because they’re good kids. They know I love them, care about them and I’m proud of the way they fought today.”
Brandon Averette on those comments by Boynton
“It made us come out and play harder.” said Averette. “Right off the bat, you can tell that we came out with a lot more energy than we did last game.”
Shaka Smart on OSU’s shooting shirts and another kind gesture for Andrew Jones
“Yeah it says a lot about Mike and his staff and their team,” said Smart. “They gave us a ball to give to Andrew with individual, personalized messages from each guy. It really means a lot and other teams show they care a lot about Andrew. Andrew is a guy that a lot of people obviously knew about and know of as a great basketball player but now for people to care about him as a person it means a lot.”
Boynton on OSU not settling for 3s
“One of the crazy things that I thought we did a really good job of was that we only took 10 3s,” said Boynton. “That may be the lowest number we’ve shot all year, and I thought we were going to have to come out here and make 10 to have a chance to win. Our team was really disciplined at trying to attack them, even against their size advantage.”
