Steve Lutz will have some familiarity on his staff for this first season in Stillwater.

Oklahoma State on Thursday announced that Robert Guster has followed Lutz to OSU after spending last season on Lutz’s staff at Western Kentucky, helping lead the Hilltoppers to the NCAA Tournament.

Guster also brings with him some OSU ties, as he spent a decade on Brooks Thompson’s staff at UTSA from 2006 to 2016.

“Robert is already well-versed in the Cowboy Way, having worked 10 years under a guy OSU fans are probably familiar with, Brooks Thompson,” Lutz said in OSU’s release. “He is a builder of strong relationships and defenses – two things that often go hand-in-hand.

“We’ll lean on his recruiting contacts throughout the Midwest to bring in talented, high-character guys, as well as his ability to teach and motivate. Please join in me in welcoming Robert, Melissa, Alivia and Shiloh to the Cowboy Basketball Family.”

Born in Chicago and raised in Louisiana, Guster is also tied with Texas, particularly the San Antonio area. He spent those 10 years at UTSA before coaching at Texas State from 2016 to 2023.

His time with the Bobcats saw the team win 20 games four times, winning the Sun Belt in 2021 and 2022. Lutz called him a “builder of strong relationships and defenses,” and that was also evident by his time in San Marcos, as the Bobcats led their league in scoring defense in five of his seven seasons on staff.

Before his time on those staffs in Texas, Guster started his coaching career as an assistant at West Plains Community College in Missouri. In Guster’s five seasons there, that team went 120-36. He then moved on to Southeast Missouri State for his first Division-I job.

Guster joins Keiton Page as confirmed assistants on Lutz’s first OSU staff, but reports also surfaced this week that Mississippi State associate head coach James Miller is also set to join the staff, as well.
