A Choctaw linebacker that the Cowboys’ new staff has kept a keen eye on is making his college decision on Friday.

Israel Hammons, a 6-foot-3, 230-pound four-star linebacker, announced via social media on Tuesday that he’ll pick a college program at 7 p.m. Friday. Rivals and 247Sports each consider Hammons a four-star prospect, with the Rivals Industry ranking listing Hammons as the No. 160 overall player in the 2027 class, making him a Top 15 linebacker and the No. 6 player from the state of Oklahoma.

Hammons didn’t announce a top group, but considering he took a visit to Stillwater in April, the Cowboys seem to be in contention. Hammons has also garnered offers from Texas, Arkansas, Baylor, Kansas State, Texas Tech and others.

Hammons’ recruitment started to take off around last November. Under new OSU coach Eric Morris, North Texas was actually the first Division-I program to offer Hammons all the way back in January of 2025. Then OSU, under Morris, became Hammons’ eighth offer this past January.

Hammons visited Oklahoma State in April alongside quarterback commit Carson White.

Hammons plays both sides of the ball at Choctaw, as a bruising linebacker and a thumping H back. Even while being 230 pounds, he returned a kick for a touchdown this past season.

The Cowboys have eight commitments in their 2027 class as of writing, and only two of those are defenders in safeties Bryson Brown (OK) and Chayce Davis (TX). Hammons would not only be the Cowboys’ highest-ranked defender, he’d be their highest-ranked prospect overall thus far if he picks the Pokes.
