Friday Night Highlights: Josh Ford Leads Stillwater Back to State Final; Fields, Kabongo Also Advance

Ford scored a touchdown and made eight tackles to push the Pioneers past Choctaw.

Every week there are fewer high school football teams playing to advance their season.

There were six Oklahoma State pledges in action this weekend with three advancing in the playoffs and three falling. Here are quick recaps on how the future Pokes did.

Josh Ford / TE / Stillwater (10-2) / Oklahoma

The Stillwater Pioneers had a wild state semifinal against Choctaw, but the Pioneers came out on top 33-29.

Josh Ford caught a 14-yard touchdown pass in the game and was also massive for the Pioneer defense, making eight tackles, including four tackles for loss.

The Pioneers trailed 29-14 heading into the fourth quarter before Ford’s touchdown. The game ended with Choctaw inside the Stillwater 5-yard line with time expiring before the Yellowjackets could get a play off.

Stillwater will play 10-2 Muskogee in the state final. The Pioneers beat Muskogee 30-20 on Nov. 3.


David Kabongo / S / Byron Nelson (13-0) / Texas

The Byron Nelson Bobcats won a battle of unbeatens in the Texas 6A-DII bracket, beating Coppell 52-45 to advance to the state quarterfinals.

David Kabongo was credited with five tackles in the game, and he even got involved with the Bobcats’ offense, rushing two times for 13 yards. He also had 19 punt return yards.

Byron Nelson has a highly anticipated rematch with Southlake Carroll in the quarterfinals. The two teams met on Oct. 27, where Byron Nelson won 34-17. It’s Southlake Carroll’s only loss of the season.


Rodney Fields / RB / Del City (12-0) / Oklahoma

Del City cruised past Claremore 34-13 in the Oklahoma 5A semifinals, setting up what ought to be the game of the year in Oklahoma: unbeaten Del city vs. unbeaten Carl Albert for a gold ball.

There weren’t stats on MaxPreps for Del City as of writing, but there was a highlight on Hudl of Fields weaving around the Claremore defense for a 19-yard touchdown run.

Del City and Carl Albert meet at 1 p.m. Saturday.


Temerrick Johnson / Edge / Midlothian Heritage (12-1) / Texas

Temerrick Johnson’s high school career came to an end, as the Midlothian Heritage Jaguars fell to South Oak Cliff 42-31 in the Texas 6A-DII playoffs.

There weren’t defensive stats for Midlothian Heritage on MaxPreps as of writing.

Here are Johnson’s highlights from the Jaguars’ 10-0 regular season.


Willie Nelson / DB / Longview (11-2) / Texas

Willie Nelson’s high school career also came to an end this past weekend when his Longview Lobos fell to Lancaster 27-24 in the third round of the Texas 5A-DI bracket.

Nelson was credited with eight tackles and a pass breakup in the game.

According to MaxPreps, Nelson had 50 tackles, four tackles for loss, six interceptions and six pass breakups in his senior season.


Caleb Hackleman / OL / Pleasant Grove (12-1) / Texas

Heartbreak for the previously unbeaten Pleasant Grove Hawks, as they fell to unbeaten Carthage 34-31 in the third round of the Texas 4A-DII playoffs.

The Hawks finished the year averaging 49.2 points a game.
