Gajewski, Holliday Discuss Impending Beer Sales for Upcoming Season

Nobody knows when alcohol will be available at Boone Pickens Sadium. Instead of waiting and wondering, fans can get a taste of a new OSU fan experience when baseball and softball season begins in Stillwater.

OSU baseball and softball are essentially the guinea pigs in a pilot program that will test the success of beer sales at sporting events. The desire for such amenities is high for most sports, but especially so in a town where about half the population is comprised of college students.

The Cowboys’ first home game is Feb. 20, and the Cowgirls’ home opener isn’t until March 2.

Baseball coach Josh Holliday said revenue isn’t much of a consideration for him. Rather, he trusts the decisions of those in administration and leadership.

“I know they put the time and research in to decide if it’s a good thing,” Holliday said. “I think it can definitely be something that’s successful. But beyond that, to be honest with you, I haven’t put much thought into it. That’s not really my space much.”

Softball coach Kenny Gajewski said he has seen drawings of the new setup and provided some insight as to what it will look like. Gajewski said the beer-selling area will be between the first-base line of Cowgirl stadium and the left-center wall of Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. He said both sides would be opened, so fans of both teams can mingle during days in which both teams are playing in Stillwater.

“For those people that want that, it’s gonna be there,” Gajewski said. “I’ll be very honest; I’m very conscious about people that don’t drink. I don’t want it to be a negative deal here at all. I want it to be part of the experience for those people that want it.

“(It’s) gonna be open for both to enjoy.”
