Hubbard Returns to the Scheme of the Crime

Chuba Hubbard watching himself pull away from Kansas State defenders on OSU’s video board was one of the iconic moments of Hubbard’s Heisman-contending 2019 season.

Hubbard ran for a career-high 296 yards against the Wildcats last season, narrowly missing out on the sixth 300-yard rushing game in OSU’s history. It would’ve been just the second non-Barry 300-yard game, joining David Thompson’s 321-yard outing against Baylor in 1996.

Against K-State, Hubbard ran for 11.8 yards a carry, also a career high. Another way to look at that stat is that he was averaging more than a first down in each of his 25 rushing attempts.

Hubbard hasn’t had the same rushing success in 2020 as he had in 2019, but he is still among the nation’s best. Hubbard’s 550 yards this season ranks 16th among all rushers in the country. He ranks third in the Big 12 behind Breece Hall (Iowa State) and Leddie Brown (West Virginia).

Although the opponent of Hubbard’s career night might be the same Saturday, there are some other factors that aren’t. The most notable is the fact that Ry Schneider is the only player who started on the offensive line during the 2019 game who will start on the O-line in the 2020 game.

With that said, K-State also has some turnover on its defense. K-State returns five defensive starters from that 2019 game on its 2020 roster, but three of those guys are defensive backs.

If Hubbard’s 2020 season is to return to the heights of his 2019 season, Saturday could be the day.
