Former Oklahoma State Quarterback Garret Rangel Transferring to Virginia Tech
Another former Cowboy QB has found a landing spot.
Both quarterbacks who transferred out from Oklahoma State this offseason have landed at Power Four programs.
A day after news broke that Maealiuaki Smith was headed to Ole Miss, Garret Rangel announced via X that he’ll play at Virginia Tech.
Rangel played three seasons in Stillwater, completing 52% of his passes for 1,075 yards, eight touchdowns and seven interceptions.
He was a four-star quarterback in the 2022 recruiting class out of Frisco, Texas. Coming out of Lone Star High School, Rangel picked the Pokes over offers from Virginia Tech, Utah, Northwestern, Houston and others.
Rangel entered this spring in a four-man quarterback battle with Smith, Zane Flores and TCU transfer Hauss Hejny. The group battled through the Cowboys’ spring camp before Rangel and Smith hit the portal. To provide some depth after losing two bodies, the Cowboys added freshman Tulsa transfer Banks Bowen to the room.
Rangel was the most experienced option in the Cowboys’ quarterback room before he and Smith announced their intentions to transfer.
Rangel joins a Hokie quarterback room that includes four other quarterbacks including 2024 starter Kryon Drones (1,562 passing yards and 16 total touchdowns) and backup William “Pop” Watson (481 passing yards and two total touchdowns) who started two games last season. Drones missed four total games due to injury including Virginia Tech’s final three.
