Golf Regional Superlatives!

Published

on

On Thursday morning if I had said, you get the two best team golf scores from any single region (of the six regions) put together and I get OSU’s total score, low man wins, you would have taken that bet, right?

Well you would have ended up tied with me.

San Diego State and Texas A&M combined to go -31 in the Tuscon region, but other than that the Cowboys beat the aggregate score of every other top two finishing teams combined.

More stupidity:

  • OSU’s top four on Saturday (Tway, Hoffman, Einhaus, and Gooch) could have all shot 75s and OSU would have still tied for 1st.
  • Peter Uihlein (the best amateur golfer on earth) didn’t even count towards the aggregate on Saturday (only top 4 scores qualify).
  • You could have made a super-team with the four best non-OSU golfers in their region and wouldn’t have gotten within 4 strokes of the Cowboys.
  • This is the 65th consecutive year OSU will be playing for the national title in golf.
  • In other words, OSU hasn’t not played for the title since before Steve Martin was born.

Kevin Tway stayed hot on Saturday posting a 69 to follow his Friday round of 65 and winning the Colorado Regional by one stroke over Scott Pinckney of Arizona State. Talor Gooch finished third, Sean Einhaus tied for fourth, Uihlein tied for ninth, and poor Morgan Hoffman could only muster a -3 for a thirteenth place finish. Might want to re-think that decision to turn pro after such a lackluster outing, Morgan.

The team has a week to regroup, or continue tuning up for the NCAAs, since I’m not sure how much “regrouping” you need to do after rolling through the Big 12s and Regionals. First round is at Karsten on Tuesday, May 31.

Oh, and look for a special golf giveaway from me via Twitter in the next week or so. You can follow me here if you aren’t doing so.
