After a long and hectic Friday, things are reportedly trending toward Gundy coaching the Cowboys again in 2025.

Wednesday was a wild ride in the Oklahoma State world, but it had nothing on Friday.

Oklahoma State and football coach Mike Gundy were at one point reportedly in a standoff just for later reports to suggest that the two were working out reconstructed contract details. As things stand, it’s leaning toward Gundy continuing to be the Cowboys’ coach, but it didn’t always feel that way Friday.

The day started with a board of regents meeting at 7:30 a.m. in the OSU Student Union. The agenda was “for the purpose of considering evaluation/assessment and other information relevant to the employment of Oklahoma State University football staff.” The meeting lasted about two hours. Essentially all of that time was spent in executive session. OSU president Dr. Kayse Shrum and athletic director Chad Weiberg joined the regents for much of the meeting. Gundy was not there.

After the meeting, board chair Jimmy Harrel said a plan was established and would be shared when it was finalized.

ESPN’s Pete Thamel then reported in the early afternoon that OSU and Gundy were in a “standoff,” and that OSU asked the coach to reconstruct his contract and that if he didn’t sign that contract, OSU had discussed firing him for cause. KOTV’s John Holcomb then reported that the restructured deal would pay Gundy less money and would “restrict his autonomy when it comes to hiring coordinators.” Holcomb reported that Gundy had until 5 p.m. Friday to make a decision.

That time came and went without anything being made public, but as the night went on, more and more reports (like these from Holcomb, Dylan Buckingham, Scott Wright and Robert Allen) began to surface that Gundy and OSU were working out contract details. There was, at one point, a thought that something could be announced Friday night, but it appears those discussions will continue into Saturday.

As of writing, that’s where things stand. It’s been a wild 16 or so hours, and though there have been ups and downs, nothing was made official. Perhaps that will happen on Saturday, but for now, it appears Gundy will run out of the tunnel with the Cowboys again in 2025 — which would be his 21st season at the helm.
