STILLWATER — The Cowboys’ quarterback situation is back to where it was before the season started.

The offseason position battle between Spencer Sanders and Dru Brown has been reset. Sanders, who won the starting job initially but missed OSU’s final two games of the regular season with a thumb injury, has returned to practice after Brown filled in for OSU’s win against West Virginia and loss against Oklahoma.

“Practices have gone good,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said Wednesday. “We’ve got Spencer out there. He’s back to full speed. Dru Brown’s out there. He’s full speed.”

In 10 games, Sanders completed 62.8 percent of his 247 passing attempts, throwing 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He also ran for two more scores. Brown played in six games during the regular season, completing 72.2 percent of his 79 passes for five touchdowns and one interception.

“We’ll play both guys,” Gundy said about the Texas Bowl.

Well what does that look like?

“I don’t know that,” Gundy said. “That part we don’t know.”

However it looks, OSU’s pair of gunslingers will be alongside Doak Walker finalist Chuba Hubbard in the OSU backfield. At one point it looked as if Hubbard and Sanders could be missing from the Cowboys’ bowl game, but after Hubbard announced he would participate on Tuesday and Gundy said that Sanders is full go Wednesday, things get a lot more interesting in Stillwater.

Turnovers have been a blemish on Sanders’ freshman season, but it’s an area he has slowly improved upon after rough games against Texas Tech and Baylor. After turning the ball over eight times and having only three touchdowns in that two-game span, Sanders had five touchdowns and two turnovers in OSU’s next three games before his injury.

“He just got back to practicing, got his cast off and is back out there,” Gundy said. “We need to watch him and just kinda see where we’re at. But I would fully expect for both (quarterbacks) to play in the game.”
