Gunnar Gundy, Son of Mike Gundy, to Walk-on at QB for OSU in 2021
Gundy plans to take the year off and join the team in 2021.
The Gundy era at Oklahoma State will be taking on a new form in 2021. The son of coach Mike Gundy, Stillwater senior Gunnar Gundy, will join the football program as a walk-on quarterback beginning in 2021, he told The Oklahoman on Friday.
Gundy graduated from Stillwater High School this month but intends to sit out the next year, putting a pause on his four-year playing clock in hopes of developing into a productive player at OSU down the line. Meantime, he’ll take classes as a part-time student in the spring and fall of 2020 before arriving as a spring enrollee in 2021.
“I’m waiting to start my four-year clock so I can hopefully get play there and finish my career there,” Gunnar told The Oklahoman.
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Gundy garnered high-major interest as a recruit, even getting offers from Eastern Michigan and Toledo, but the lure to play for his dad at home was too strong. Insiders around the program have long expected Gundy to play for his father in some capacity, though waiting a year for 2021 is a bit surprising.
Gundy led the Pioneers to the state championship game as a senior this past season before falling to Bixby, led by OSU signee Brennan Presley. According to MaxPreps, Gundy threw for 3,481 yards and 47 touchdowns this past season (to only 3 interceptions). During his illustrious high school career he passed for 6,627 yards and 78 scores in total.
