Hoops Preview: Cowboys’ Season on the Line in First Round Game Against TCU
For Boynton and his Cowboys the Big 12 Tournament is all about taking one game at a time.
STILLWATER — The Cowboys’ rough season has been somewhat reset.
The Oklahoma State basketball team plays in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Kansas City, a tournament the Cowboys will have to win to play beyond this week. The Cowboys play the tournament opener in the eight/nine game against TCU.
“We’re really focusing on one game at a time,” Lindy Waters said. “If we don’t win the first one, we don’t even have another chance. Just one game at a time, and when Thursday comes, we’ll take care of that.”
A win Wednesday would make for a quick turnaround for the seven-scholarship Cowboys, as they would play at 1:30 p.m. Thursday against top-seeded Kansas State.
The Cowboys played TCU twice in February, losing at the buzzer Feb. 6 in Fort Worth before defeating the Horned Frogs on Feb. 18 in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
“I don’t know if the record ever doesn’t matter,” OSU coach Mike Boynton said. “We’re in ninth place. That’s why we’re playing Wednesday. We’re aware of that. We also know that this is a unique deal. It’s a tournament. It’s one game and you win, you move on, you lose, you don’t. That’s kinda the approach we’re going to take is try to put ourselves into a position to win on Wednesday, then see what happens from there.”
