Hoops Preview: Lindy Waters Set to Play Final Game in Hometown

Lindy Waters returns home one last time.

STILLWATER — It has become a bit of a joke at this point to mention that Lindy Waters, a Cowboy, is in fact from Norman.

For four years now, Waters has been called into media scrums before Bedlam games to talk about his hometown’s team. Yes, he is also a former teammate of NBA All-Star Trae Young.

But this is the last time he’ll be bombarded with questions of returning to Norman.

Waters has played in two games as a Cowboy in Lloyd Noble Center, missing the one his sophomore season when Young was a Sooner with a concussion. In the LNC, Waters is 1-1.

As a freshman in 2017, the Cowboys pulled off a dramatic 68-66 win thanks to a go-ahead 3-pointer from Phil Forte. Waters called it his favorite Bedlam memory.

Down 66-65 with under 30 seconds to go, Jawun Evans stole the ball from Jordan Woodard in the backcourt. Squirming on the ground, Evans tossed the ball to Waters who dished it back to Evans when he got up.

Evans drove to the bucket but was unable to get a contested floater to fall. Jeffery Carroll jumped up and looked to have gotten fouled on a rebound attempt but there was no call. Falling out of bounds, Carroll spiked the ball in play. With one hand, Evans collected the ball inches from the baseline and ripped it out to Forte for the game-winning bucket.

“I was right under the net, not hoping he missed, but if he missed I would get the rebound and be the hero,” Waters joked. “I watched the ball go right through the next right above me.”

In the win, Waters scored 11 points, the most for him in a Big 12 game as a freshman.

His hometown wasn’t as sweet to him his junior season. Waters had seven points and played just 21 minutes as a starter after getting in foul trouble. OSU would lose that game 74-64.

His last competitive game in Norman on Saturday will break the tie.

“I’m going to leave everything I got out there,” Waters said.
