How Cowboy Wrestling Could Make a Lineup Work if they Land Carson Kharchla and Dustin Plott

OSU has some pretty big time upper weights coming in with a new class of freshmen, and they also have some big names they have a pretty reasonable shot at landing as 2019 and 2020 recruits that are around the same size.

Here are the guys I’m talking about.

  • Sophomore transfer: Dakota Geer — Wrestled 184 the last two years.
  • Incoming Freshman: Travis Wittlake — Projected 165-174.
  • Incoming Freshman: Anthony Montalvo — Projected 184-197.
  • 2019 Recruit: Carson Kharchla — Projected 174 (has OSU in his top 5).
  • 2020 Recruit: Dustin Plott – Projected 165-174 (in-state recruit out of Tuttle, OK).

The big question that gets brought up is whether OSU could manage to work all of them into the lineup? If they can, how do they do it?

Here are my thoughts.

Wittlake and Montalvo seem certain to redshirt this year. On other teams they may start as true freshmen, but it makes more sense for them to redshirt here.

After Jacobe Smith, Chandler Rogers, and Preston Weigel graduate, the 2019-20 lineup opens up giving them all an opportunity to start. They’ll still have to earn the job as Austin Harris and Bear Hughes have been pretty solid and I think could compete for lineup spots eventually. But you could reasonably project Wittlake to be 65 or 74 with Joe Smith at the other weight and Montalvo and Geer at 84 or 97. Both have told me they’re willing to go up for the team if needed. If the Cowboys sign Kharchla this would be his redshirt year.

2018-19 2019-2020 2020-2021 2021-2022
Redshirt Wittlake Kharchla Plott
Redshirt Montalvo
65 Wittlake Wittlake Plott
74 Smith Kharchla Wittlake
84 Geer Geer Kharchla
97 Montalvo Montalvo Montalvo

The next year Joe Smith would be gone and Kharchla would enter the lineup at either 65 or 74. If they are able to land in-state superstar Plott, he could spend his freshman year as a redshirt, and the lineup would be Kharchla/Wittlake at 65/74 in no particular order, and Montalvo/Geer at 84/97 in no particular order.

The next year Plott enters the lineup after his redshirt freshman season, Geer graduates and Montalvo goes 197. Then one of Kharchla, Plott, or Wittlake goes up to 84.

This is a pretty ideal scenario as far as signings and that sort of thing. We obviously don’t operate in a vacuum, and the Cowboys may not land all these guys. If the Cowboys do sign all of them though, every one of them would still probably start all four years.

Kids grow, even in college. Look at Joe Smith. He’s massive compared to what he came in at. You can very reasonably expect one of them to put on a little size and be willing to go 184.

All that makes for a pretty strong sell.

  1. A chance to start for four years,
  2. A great group in the room surrounding your size to develop with.
  3. Daton Fix and Kaden Gfeller as anchors on the other end of the lineup for most of your career.
  4. With Chris Perry, Tyler Caldwell, and Alex Dieringer there’s not a team in the country with a more credentialed group of post-grad wrestlers and staff at that size.

Again there’s no certainty that the Cowboys land either of Kharchla or Plott, but the lineup would work fine if they do. So for anyone looking at them and thinking Could they make the lineup work? They definitely could and actually with redshirts it would almost work out perfectly.
