How Oklahoma State’s Basketball Coaches Are Preparing for the Winter Weather
‘We’re gonna make sure that we go pick them up for practice and those sorts of things.’
STILLWATER — It’s tricky enough getting your own affairs in order ahead of a winter storm, but now imagine also being in charge of 15 college kids.
That’s what Jacie Hoyt and Steve Lutz are tasked with this weekend. According to David Payne, Stillwater can be looking at 6 to 12 inches of snow this weekend. In the midst of basketball season, OSU’s coaches are preparing their players for games and preparing them for the winter weather.
“First of all, those guys are oblivious to any of it,” Lutz said. “So, that was the first conversation was, ‘Guys, we gotta drip your water at night. You’ve got to maybe buy some extra water for your house or sodas.’ Obviously we make sure they’re taken care of, like, if we have to get food to their apartments or where they’re living, we’re gonna make sure that they’re fed. We’re gonna make sure that we go pick them up for practice and those sorts of things. We’re gonna continue on and do what we do in a normal fashion.
“I have children of my own, so it’s a little bit just like that. You gotta educate them a little bit. They just don’t know. They don’t know what they don’t know.”
It’s a big day for OSU basketball, too. Not only is the No. 9 team in the country coming to GIA, but it’s the annual Remember the Ten game.
Hoyt’s Cowgirls have to deal with traveling during the winter storm, but since their next game isn’t until Sunday in Boulder, Hoyt said they are getting out ahead of the storm.
“We just leave,” Hoyt said. “We just avoid it. We’re leaving early. It’s simple — just get out of dodge. We’re leaving a day early. We’re leaving (Friday) instead of Saturday. Our travel people are so on top of things and take the highest precautions with stuff, so we’ll leave early. I’m a little bummed because it’s another day away from Harlow (Hoyt’s daughter), but I’ve got a team to take care of, so we’re just gonna dip out early.”
