The Cowboys took care of the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils on Sunday despite a lackluster showing at times on both sides of the court, showing the talent disparity between a team picked to finish last in the Big 12 and a winless Southwestern Athletic Conference unit.

The Cowboys got off to a 7-0 start, again making a point to go to Mitchell Solomon in the post. The senior started at the 5 with Cam McGriff starting in place of Lucas N’Guessan and taking Solomon’s place at the 4.

Solomon made his first five shots leading all scorers at the half with 11 points and grabbed four rebounds and two steals in 11 minutes in the opening period. He didn’t attempt another shot and only played seven minutes in the second half.

After a quick start and going up 19-4, the Cowboys stagnated a bit on offense and relaxed on defense affording the Delta Devils the opportunity to make it close with an 8-0 run. But the Cowboys stormed back, scoring frequently in transition and essentially put the game out of reach before the intermission.

Five different Cowboys reached double digits including Solomon. Kendall Smith led the team with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting (2 of 6 from 3), dished out five assists and just one turnover.

Tavarius Shine scored 13 on 5 of 9 (3 of 6 from 3), had one rebound and three assists. Cam McGriff (4 of 5, 1 of 1 from 3) had 11 and nine rebounds, and Jeffrey Carroll had a pedestrian (for him) 10 points on of 3 of 9 from the field ad 1 of 4 from beyond the arc.

Mississippi Valley State was led by Jordan Evans with 16 points on 6 of 14 (4 of 7 from 3) and two rebounds. The Devil Dogs fall to 0-8.

Oklahoma State moves to 7-1 and will host the No. 8 Wichita State Shockers on Saturday, December 9 at 3 p.m.
