Instacap: Cowboys Suffer 67-56 Home Loss to Baylor

An end-of-first-half drought that halftime couldn’t remedy led to a crushing loss for the Cowboys on Tuesday evening. Oklahoma State (14-10 overall, 4-7 Big 12) lost to Baylor (14-10, 4-7), 67-56, deflating the Pokes’ tourney hopes and marking a season sweep for the Bears.

The Cowboys led by two a few minutes before the break, but the Bears rattled off 11 consecutive points to take a 39-30 lead into halftime. Nine of those 11 came from beyond the arc, and six of which were from Manu Lecomte. It marked the first time Baylor led at half in conference play. There were nine lead-changes in the first half.

The scoring drought didn’t cease when Mike Boynton’s squad retook the court. The Cowboys remained stuck at 30 points until Mitchell Solomon hit a jump hook with less than 15 minutes to go. It’s tough to win games when you go longer than nine minutes without scoring. Baylor’s overall run was 16-0 and led to a 14-point lead.

The Cowboys went on an 8-0 run to trim the lead to six after Boynton called a timeout a few minutes later. Whatever he said seemed to work. Unfortunately, the Bears wouldn’t stay cold for long, and Lecomte kept Baylor in the lead, whether he was dishing the rock or scoring it.

Lecomte, who went off for 30 points in the first meeting, led the Bears in scoring with 18 points and chipped in five assists. He shot an absurd 18-of-29 against OSU this season.

The Cowboys got contributions from their big men early. Yankuba Sima scored four points in the game’s first 10 minutes, surpassing his season average (3.9 points per game) rather swiftly. He didn’t score afterward, however, so that average will stay where it is.

Solomon, as usual, dove onto the floor for a few loose balls and scored six early points of his own. He finished with one of his best games of the season, scoring 13 points to go along with four steals and five boards.

He also had an amazing sequence late, drawing a charge on one end of the court before getting a steal, offensive rebound, and drawing another foul to get to the free-throw line. He hit one of his free throws to bring OSU to within six.

That helped the Cowboys inch back late, and they eventually trimmed the lead to five at one point. But Baylor kept hitting shots to stay ahead. OSU struggled mightily from the free-throw line, going 7-for-15. Jeffrey Carroll had an uninspiring game, going 4-of-12 from the field and 1-of-6 from beyond the arc.

It has been a rollercoaster of a season so far for Boynton and the Cowboys. They were at their highest point Saturday after upending Kansas on the road. After allowing Baylor to record its first road win of the season, now the Cowboys might be facing a new low.
