Instacap: Oklahoma State Completes Kansas Sweep 82-64 on Senior Day

Oklahoma State completed a wire-to-wire upset, downing the Big 12 champs 82-64 inside Gallagher-Iba Arena and completing the first sweep during Bill Self’s Hall of Fame tenure at Kansas.

The crowd inside Gallagher-Iba Arena was buzzing after the Cowboys took a 7-4 lead over the Big 12 champs. It erupted with Mitchell Solomon dialed up an NBA-distance 3-pointer for Senior Day.

Then it just got louder from there.

The Cowboys used some hot shooting and some stifling defense to keep the Jayhawks at arm’s length for most of the first half and carried a 16-point lead into the break.

Kansas was table to whittle Oklahoma State’s lead down to single digits midway through the second half. But the Jayhawks were a one-trick pony with only Player of the Year candidate Devonte Graham scoring in double digits. And that was a pedestrian 15 points on 4-of-14 shooting for the senior.

The Cowboys blew a 10-point lead open with a 10-0 run late and it was over in time for a ceremonious exits for the four who took part in Senior Day.

When it was over

With OSU turnovers piling up and Kansas threatening to rain on the Senior Day parade, Lindy Waters picked up his team-leading 17th charge of the season, albeit questionably, and then paid it off with a huge 3-pointer to push the Cowboys up 17 with six minutes remaining.

That’s not normally a safe lead against Kansas but with the crowd behind them this team wasn’t going to let this game slip away.

They knew it, the crowd knew it, and Bill Self knew it.

Player(s) of the game

OSU’s four seniors wrote quite the goodbye letter to GIA on Saturday. Kendall Smith, Mitchell Solomon, Tavarius Shine and Jeffrey Carroll combined for 62 points, just two fewer than Kansas’ entire team.

Kendall Smith snarled as he poured in a career-high 25 points on 9-of-15 shooting, including making 4 of his 6 3s. Smith also had three rebounds and three assists to just one turnover.

Mitchell Solomon came within one of his own career high with 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting, 7 rebounds and this.

What’s next

The Cowboys will be the No. 8 seed and face No. 9 Oklahoma in Round 1 of the Big 12 Tournament on Wednesday.
