The Cowboys as a whole looked solid this session but showed some signs of rust at 174 and 197. They are simply way undersized at 157 with Jonce Blaylock out. John Smith said in the interviews afterwards that they felt Jonce would further his injury if he were to have wrestled here and ultimately that was the deciding factor on starting Moran.

Naturally as the tournament progresses the matchups get tougher, but this next round the individual matches are huge for each guy. On the championship side, win and you’re in the NCAA tournament.

The Cowboys are favored at 125, 141, 149, 165, 197, and 285 and technically I would say are favored at 133 though Brock did lose to Bridges early on in the season. At 174 and 184 they’ll need upsets to get in the final. Weigel at 197 has a very tough matchup and when you considered it’s just his second match back from injury he’ll need to wrestle well to win it.

As noted, the injuries at 74-97 make me a little nervous. Both guys looked a bit tentative with their wrestling early and needed to hit big moves late to win, but once they shook the rust off a little they looked solid. This by Jacobe Smith was insane, and he hit a similar one a few minutes later for the fall.

At 133 Brock struggled on bottom as he always has and he chose down and was ridden out. I get Smith doing that with him during the regular season, but I’m really hoping we don’t see it tonight or tomorrow against stiffer competition. I may lose my mind if he does it against Seth Gross in the final.

At 125, 141, 149, 165, and heavyweight, I like what I saw with the exception of giving up some late points at 149. These guys should all win comfortably tonight and move on to the final.
