Oklahoma State (11-4, 1-2) secured its first Big 12 win of Mike Boynton’s career and broke a 10-game losing streak to Iowa State with its 96-87 overtime win on Saturday.

Jeffrey Carroll appeared out of no where to make good on a missed Kendall Smith jump shot with two hands, which prompted a shout and a roar from the fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena. It was the Cowboys’ first lead in overtime.

On the next possession, Carroll put the Cowboys up 2 when he knocked in just his second 3-pointer in five tries. The Cowboys wouldn’t trail the rest of the way.

Four Cowboys scored in double figures with Carroll leading the way with 24 points on 14 shots and eight rebounds. Kendall Smith had 20 on 7-of-18 shooting and five assists and Tavarius Shine and Mitchell Solomon pitched in 15 and 14, respectively.

Senior guard Donovan Jackson led all scorers with a career-high 30 points on 8-of-12 shooting and going 6-of-8 from 3. He also grabbed five boards. Solomon Young scored 12 points (5 of 9) and grabbed four rebounds and Nick Weiler-Babb was one rebound shy of his first career triple-double when he fouled out with 12 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds.

Oklahoma State started hot and built its lead to as much 14 points and controlled most of the first half. The Cowboys were forcing turnovers and quick shots and getting out in transition. But a nearly 6-minute scoring drought saw the Cyclones end the half on a 17-2 run. Brandon Averette’s jumper with 3 seconds left at least showed that the rim was working before the Cowboys went to the locker room down 34-32.

The Cowboys came out of the break in a little more rhythm offensively and the it was a back-and-forth affair for most of the second half.

Lindy Waters showed what the Cowboys were missing after missing Bedlam due to a concussion. His late-third quarter lob to Mitchell Solomon jump-started the crowd inside Gallagher-Iba.

The Cowboys found themselves down 78-77 when a string of controversial plays ended with both teams knotted as time expired. First, a questionable no call on what could have been a foul committed by Solomon Young on Jeffrey Carroll saw the ball headed to the Cyclones. But possession was overturned on replay and the Cowboys had a chance to take the lead with 24 seconds left.

On the ensuing missed layup by Carroll was tipped on the cylinder and called offensive interference. The replay of the non-reviewable call seems to have shown Iowa State’s Hans Brase touch it first.

Oklahoma State would still get the equalizer from Kendall Smith and a clock issue saw the most anti-climactic end of regulation I can remember.

After starting the extra period with a few empty offensive possessions, the Cowboys ended on a 9-0 run, beating the Cyclones at home for the first time in five tries.

Next up, Oklahoma State heads to Manhattan to face Kansas State on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
