BOXSCORE

The Cowgirls officially showed the Big 12 just how stacked they are with offensive talent.

Oklahoma State defeated Cincinnati 91-63 on the road thanks to a record-setting game from Haliegh Timmer and Micah Gray’s fourth consecutive 20-point outing.

With a team so loaded with scorers, you can kind of pick your poison. And the Cowgirls can run it up quick, even when some of their best players have an off night.

You wouldn’t know it from the final score, but the Cowgirls took about a quarter to really get going offensively. Well, most of them.

OSU led 20-15 after the first quarter then went on a 13-3 run midway through the second, fueled by three quick forced turnovers, to take control of the game from the shorthanded Bearcats. OSU never relinquished it.

OSU led 43-27 at the half and then pushed its lead to as much as 28 in the third quarter before taking a 70-46 advantage into the fourth and it was essentially over from there.

Coming in, seven Cowgirls averaged double digits in scoring, but they only needed three double-digit scorers to complete the rout.

Haleigh Timmer said after the game that OSU wanted to “send a statement” to the rest of the league. Well, she definitely made a point about what she brings to the table.

After going 1-for-7 from the field against Tulsa, including a very un-Haleigh Timmer 0-for-5 from deep, the Cowgirls’ sharpshooter hit the floor on fire. She was 5-for-6 from beyond the arc in the first quarter and then made all four of her deep balls in the third quarter. She finished with a career-high 35 points and tied an OSU record making 10 of her 13 3-point attempts.

After he big first quarter, Timmer handed the baton to Micah Gray who continued her dominant string of games. She scored nine in the second, part of 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting, including going 4-of-5 from the free-throw line.

Lena Girardi wanted to get in on the action when she saw the court. In just 18 minutes, she scored 13 points, including seven in the fourth quarter with the game very much in hand.

Timmer and Gray found their shots, but the Cowgirls ratcheted up the defense in the second, going to a full-deny that gave the Bearcats fits and forced a lot of turnovers. OSU scored 23 points off of 18 Cincy TOs.

Stailee Heard went scoreless for the first time in her career but still facilitated her teammates. She was 0-for-5 from the field, only attempting one shot in the second half. The Cowgirls didn’t need her to force the issue, but it continues a trend of Heard not being as aggressive this season as we’ve seen in the past. The former All-Big 12 first-teamer scored 26 against Missouri Valley State on Dec. 6, but other than that, has only reached double digits once (10 points) since Nov. 19.

Achol Akot led all rebounders with 12 boards to go along with six points. Jadyn Wooten added eight points and a game-high seven assists.

Cincinnati’s Mya Perry scored her 1,000th career point on a 3-pointer over Lena Gerardi and was promptly given a technical foul for the celebration. That was a bit of a microcosm for the way things went for the Bearcats. Cincinnati freshman Joya Crawford set a career high in the second consecutive game, scoring 18 on 14 shots.

The Bearcats were down four rotation players coming in, only thinning their margin of error against a team like the Cowgirls. But OSU was even able to beat the Bearcats at their own game.

Cincinnati came in leading the Big 12 in offensive rebounds per game and had not been out-rebounded all season. The Cowgirls owned the glass, out-rebounding the Bearcats 40-27 and holding a 19-13 edge in offensive boards. That resulted in 12 more shot attempts and a 23-16 advantage in second-chance points.

With the win, the Cowgirls improve to 12-2 and 1-0 in Big 12 play. The Bearcats fall to 5-8 (0-1 Big 12). Next up, after 10 days off over the holidays, the Cowgirls will host Baylor at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31.
