Instant Recap: Oklahoma State Falls in Bedlam 38-20

on

Not the day the Cowboys had in mind when they woke up.

Oklahoma State got off to a fast start to keep pace with the Sooners in the first half. The score was tied, 17-17 with under a minute. And with time winding down and the Cowboys in possession around the 50-yard line, Oklahoma State elected to run the clock out with a timeout in the pocket. It was a foreshadowing of what was to come from Mike Gundy.

The Sooners shut it down offensively in the second half, scoring two touchdowns and limiting Oklahoma State on the ground. They weren’t able to get Justice Hill and Chris Carson going down the stretch, which was one of the biggest factors. Even with Dede Westbrook out of the game after an injury, the defense couldn’t hold Baker Mayfield, who ripped up the defense with his legs and with his arm.

The game-shifter in this one, though, was a call that Gundy went conservative with. On 3rd and 10 down 11, Oklahoma State called a run play and picked up 8 yards. And instead of going for it to pick up the first down, they went for a field goal that hooked right.

The very next play: Joe Mixon took it to the house for a touchdown to essentially end the game.

The Cowboys fell 38-20. And it was never really much of a game after the second half.
