BOXSCORE

Despite Stailee Heard turning in her best game of the season, the Cowgirls came up short in Fort Worth.

Oklahoma State fell to No. 13 TCU 69-61 in a game that was scrappy and hard-fought from wire to wire.

The Cowgirls fell behind as much as seven in the first quarter thanks to some hot perimeter shooting from the Horned Frogs, but OSU fought back to within one early in the second. Stailee Heard had one of her best opening quarters this season, pouring in eight, and then Jadyn Wooten added six in the second. The two had 12 and 11, respectively, at the break, but the Cowgirls trailed 33-28 thanks to the Horned Frogs’ out-shooting them on the perimeter. The two would go on to combine for 48 of OSU’s 61 points.

The Horned Frogs’ hot hands didn’t cool during the break, but Heard was not going to let them run away with it. She made tough shot after tough shot while making all the unglamorous plays that she’s made all year.

The Cowgirls took their first lead with 6:59 to go and in dramatic fashion.

Heard lost a loose ball that she couldn’t coral that would have led to a fast break opportunity. That led to jeering from the home crowd, to which Heard beckoned for more. Moments later, Heard took a turnover in transition for an and-1 to put the Cowgirls up 51-50. Unfortunately for the Cowgirls, the Horned Frogs immediately went on a 7-0 run to go up 57-51 with 5:32 to go.

Hayleigh Timmer knocked down a 3 to pull the Cowgirls within 56-53 but the Horned Frogs were able to keep the Cowgirls at arm’s length the rest of the way thanks to a rowdy home crowd and the No. 2 scoring and field goal % defense in the nation. The Cowgirls went scoreless for three and a half minutes down the stretch ,and the Frogs made six of their last seven.

Jadyn Wooten led all scorers with 25 points off the bench. She shot 10-of-19 from the field, grabbed four rebounds, dished two assists and grabbed two steals in 33 minutes.

Heard finished with 23 points on 9-of-19 shooting, her second 20-point outing this season. She also grabbed five boards and two steals. Heard made her first two 3-point attempts but then missed her last eight. That was a trend for the Cowgirls who went an uncharacteristic 4-of-22 from beyond the arc — a season-low 18% — while the Horned Frogs shot 9-of-18 from deep (50%).

With the loss, the Cowgirls fall to 13-4 and 2-2 in Big 12 play. Next up, they return home to host Colorado at 1 p.m. on Sunday inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
