Instant Recap: Oklahoma State Loses Third Big 12 Game to West Virginia 38-14
Cowboys drop to 0-3 in Big 12 play.
STILLWATER — It was a game that had Cowboy fans at Boone Pickens Stadium booing and grumbling more than cheering.
West Virginia handled Oklahoma State 38-14 on Saturday, dropping OSU to 0-3 in Big 12 play for the first time since Mike Gundy’s first season leading the program. The Cowboys’ defense gave up 560 yards, while the offense managed to put up only 227 total yards.
The Mountaineers started the game with a 24-0 lead while putting points on the board in their first five drives. OSU, meanwhile, punted twice before Alan Bowman threw an interception in its first three possessions. The Cowboys, already down 24, didn’t score until Bowman threw an eight-yard touchdown to Rashod Owens with 1:54 left in the first half. The Mountaineers then quickly marched down the field in 28 seconds to add another touchdown before halftime, making the count 31-7 at the break.
Those offensive woes for OSU bled into the second half as its first three drives went punt, interception and punt. After that interception from Bowman to end the second possession, Garret Rangel replaced him at quarterback for the second-straight home game. Bowman exited having completed 53% of his passes for 116 yards and a TD with a pair of interceptions. Bowman, a seventh-year senior, has thrown two interceptions in three consecutive games.
In three drives controlling the offense, Rangel was 4-of-5 with 75 yards and a TD while leading the Cowboys to seven points. After OSU punted Rangel’s first possession out there, he capped his second outing with a 43-yard TD pass to De’Zhaun Stribling.
The Cowboys get a week off before traveling to Provo to play an undefeated BYU team at 9:15 p.m. Oct. 18. Three of OSU’s next four games will be on the road.
