Jersey Numbers for Eight Incoming OSU Football Players Announced
A look at the eight newbies who have been assigned numbers.
Nearly half of Oklahoma State’s 24-man incoming football recruiting class has been assigned jersey numbers for the 2020-2021 football season.
Oklahoma State released eight of the numbers of those who were early enrollees/mid-year transfers this week, ranging from defensive back to defensive line to quarterback and offensive line.
The traditional transfers are Josh Sills (graduate from WVU), Tyren Irby (JUCO), Collin Clay (Arkansas). Sills will wear No. 72 while Irby and Clay will be 90s buddies at 91 and 93, respectively.
The high school signees are Nick Session (14), Shane Illingworth (16), Monroe Mills (71), Eli Russ (75) and Quinton Stewart (82). Below is the full list (and here’s the updated online roster for inquiring minds).
Player | Pos. | Jersey # |
---|---|---|
Nick Session | S | 14 |
Shane Illingworth | QB | 16 |
Monroe Mills | OL | 71 |
Josh Sills | OL | 72 |
Eli Russ | OL | 75 |
Quinton Stewart | TE | 82 |
Tyren Irby | DE | 91 |
Collin Clay | DT | 93 |
A few thoughts …
1. Clay listed at DT is interesting. Not surprising, but interesting. The former Putnam City star was considered a DE coming out of high school a year ago but has bulked up to a listed 6-3, 296 pounds (after being listed in high school at 6-3, 261). Him playing inside makes a ton of sense and OSU listing him as such is validation of suspicion that he’d kick inside. He’s going to be a pocket-disruptor from that position, and I imagine him growing into a DeQuinton Osborne-like presence on the interior.
2. Shane Illingworth, the teen jersey. Here is the last starting OSU quarterback to don a number in the teens:
That quarterback is now the head honcho gunslinger for the Tampa Bay Vipers.
Corndog aside, one of my favorite OSU quarterbacks, Josh Fields, had some decent success donning a teen number (No. 13).
3. High expectations for Quinton Stewart. The over/under on my dad accidentally referring to Quinton Stewart as baby Rashaun, thanks to the No. 82 jersey number, is set at roughly eleventy billion over the next four years. And honestly, I’m taking the over. I just hope he sniffs the same ballpark of success Rashaun had.
