Lincoln Riley Showers Chuba Hubbard With Praise Ahead of Saturday’s Bedlam

Lincoln believes Chuba is an NFL back (and so do we).

Lincoln Riley ain’t no dummy. He knows a good talent when he sees one. And so on Saturday night, shortly after his OU team survived a near-collapse at home against TCU, he got ahead of the inevitable and imminent questions he’ll get this week ahead of Saturday’s Bedlam game by answering the most obvious one he’ll get about OSU’s Heisman contender, Chuba Hubbard.

Your thoughts, Lincoln?

“Chuba Hubbard is an NFL running back,” he said via the Tulsa World’s Eric Bailey. “Give the Oklahoma State guys and Chuba credit. He’s become a complete player and as good an individual player as we’ll play all year.”

What’s funny is that Riley seems to be the only college football coach in the state believing Hubbard is an NFL back. Just last week, as Hubbard comfortably led the NCAA in rushing yards, Mike Gundy suggested that perhaps he’s not quite ready.

“I just know that he has a long ways to go in preparing himself to make that jump and be successful at that level,” Gundy said via The Oklahoman. “He’s only played in 13 college games. And we all know that the next level, that is a man’s game, and the running backs take an enormous amount of hits. And for a young man to make that step, he’s got to really be ready.”

Part of that is posturing for Gundy (if not all of it). He isn’t going to just come out and say you know what, he’s NFL good. Might as well shut it down. Still, the difference between what the two coaches said recently is pretty funny.

Part of that, though, is the fact that Chuba Hubbard is really friggin’ good and Lincoln Riley knows it. After seeing it firsthand last season, where Hubbard went for 154 all-purpose yards as the lead back against the Sooners, he may be crossing his fingers and hoping that Hubbard’s potential last Bedlam game isn’t an all-timer.
