The Cowboys are in the desert for some #Big12AfterDark a year early.

Both teams enter the contest 1-0 after Week 1 wins over FCS opponents. But while, the Cowboys split reps equally between three quarterbacks last week, the Sun Devils might have their QB of the future in Jaden Rashada.

Keep it here for in-game updates. But until then, here’s some pregame content to get you ready for OSU’s first Power Five matchup of 2023.

Also, if you’re a PFB+ subscriber, the conversation is already underway.

LIVE UPDATES

Cowboys win 27-15.

The Cowboys will line up for victory formation, Rangel’s fourth possession to keep it even between the three QBs. That’s the main thing.

SCORING UPDATE: OSU 27, ASU 15 | Q4 | 2:56

And that might do it. Rangel finds Brenna Presley for what might be the game-sealing score.

On three TODs by Arizona State, OSU turned two into touchdowns.

Arizona State went for it on fourth down again and turned it over again. Cowboys need to take advantage.

SCORING UPDATE: OSU 20, ASU 15 | Q4 | 7:11

The Cowboys march down the field, thanks to a big 34-yard run by Jaden Nixen. But a costly delay of game on Rangel on a first-and-goal from the 5, makes OSU settle for a FG. Gotta think the rusty QB in his second series might have had something to do with it.

OSU’s defense forces a three-and-out and, thanks to a nice little return from Brennan Presley, Rangel will get another shot at it from his own 43.

The Cowboys’ defense gets a stop as the third quarter ticks away. Sun Devils will punt from their 47 when the fourth quarter starts.

Of note, Gunnar Gundy has used up his four drives so, if things go according to plan, we’ll see Garret Rangel to start the final period.

Penalties have been an issue. OSU up to eight for 57 yards. This last one killed a drive. OSU gets called for third false start of the game on third-and-five. Alex Hale misses left on a 50-yard FG attempt.

Lyrik Rawls hauls in his first career interception to give the Cowboys back the ball up two with as much momentum as they’ve had all night.

SCORING UPDATE: OSU 17, ASU 15 | Q3 | 9:09

OSU finally got something going on the ground. Ollie Gordon picked up all 47 rushing yards on that drive (and currently on the box score) to set up a Gundy2Stribling score.

The Sun Devils looked ready to march down the field and score on the first drive of the third quarter, but OSU gets another turnover on downs.

And that drive pretty much ended before it began. The Cowboys go three-and-out and that sack of Gunnar Gundy puts the net rushing total back to zero with 38 seconds left in the half.

The Cowboys take advantage of a questionable decision. ASU elected to go for it on fourth-and-5 and Anthony Goodlow gets a sack to turn it over the old-fashioned way. Pokes will start on the ASU 47 this time.

SCORING UPDATE: OSU 10, ASU 15 | Q2 | 7:41

Bowman just led OSU to its first TD, but he’s out for Gunnar Gundy. Unfortunately, Bowman hit his four-drive quota.

On Gundy’s first crack, the Cowboys find the scoreboard. He got into a rhythm, going 3-for-4 for 28 yards but still nothing going on the ground. OSU now has three total rushing yards, down from six before this drive.

But Alex Hale sets a new career high with a 52-yard FG.

SCORING UPDATE: OSU 7, ASU 15 | Q2 | 1:51

The Cowboys nearly forced back-to-back three-and-outs but Jaden Rashada broke free and just earned the first down. Then on the next play he throws a 65-yard TD. Then after OSU gets dinged for an offsides on the PAT, ASU goes for (and converts) a 2-point conversion.

Defense getting tested. And testing itself.

SCORING UPDATE: OSU 7, ASU 7 | Q2 | 11:58

The Cowboys are able to manufacture some yards in the passing game and get to first-and-goal and are able to get in on the third try.

The defense responds on that drive to force a three-and-out and a short punt sets up the offense on the ASU 43-yard line. Will be the Cowboys’ best starting position of the game. We’ll see if they can make use of it.

If you can’t block for handoffs, throw screen passes to your RBs. The Cowboys started to get something going before an 18-yard play was called back due to holding. Then Bowman took a sack and the Cowboys come up empty again.

SCORING UPDATE: OSU 0, ASU 7 | Q1 | 4:28

The Sun Devils were cooking on that drive. They followed up a futile rushing performance by the Cowboys by running down the Pokes’ throat. This could be a longer night than we thought for OSU.

Another drive with a pass play to Stribling stalls outs. When putting in running situations, the Cowboys rushers have nowhere to go. Not looking great on the ground early.

OSU’s defense gets the three-and-out, but it looks like the Cowboys will start from behind to start after a holding call on the punt return.

On his first snap, Bowman found De’Zhaun Stribling in play-action and Stribling took it 20 yards. Unfortunately, the drive stalled out after that.
