The Cowboys move to 1-0 with a win over Central Arkansas. They played three different quarterbacks but it was Gunnar Gundy who captained them to a win.

END of GAME: OSU 27, UCA 13

Scoring Update: OSU 27, UCA 13

But the Bears aren’t done.

Scoring Update: OSU 27, UCA 7

Gunnar Gundy seems to have stepped in. He leads the Cowboys on a much-needed scoring drive that ends in an Ollie Gordon score to make the scoreboard look more appropriate for an OSU-Central Arkansas game.

Scoring Update: OSU 20, UCA 7

OSU started to pull away when Michigan State transfer Elijah Collins broke loose for his first TD as a Cowboy.

End of 3Q: OSU 13, 7

Scoring Update: OSU 13, UCA 7 | 3Q | 4:37

That didn’t last long. Central Arkansas gets in on a slot shot from Will McElvain to Tamaurian Wilson. It’s a one-score game late in the third quarter (TO AN FCS TEAM).

I think the Cowboys caught a break. A Bears fumble that was retained by UCA was called down on contact. I don’t see it. But the Cowboys get another chance to test fate and shut them down in the redzone.

It looks like Korie Black got a hand on his second field goal attempt of the evening to keep the Bears off the scoreboard. If he did, he’d tie a school record for blocked kicks in a single game.

END of 2Q: OSU 13, UCA 0

Alex Hale nails his second FG of the quarter to give the Pokes a 13-0 walk-off lead going into the half.

Looks like a serious injury for UCA offensive lineman Frazier Rose. Brutal.

Scoring Update: OSU 10, UCA 0 | 2Q 5:34

Bowman’s first drive ends with a field goal to put the Pokes up 10-0. Some nice things on that drive from the journeyman, but still some bugs to work out across the offense.

Bowman’s first OSU drive: 4-for-7, 29 yards

Rangel plays one drive in the second but doesn’t attempt a pass. After a quick there-and-out, we do see Alan Bowman on the next drive.

END Of 1Q: OSU 17, UCA 0

Garret Rangel goes 10-for-15 for 118 yards, one TD and one INT. There are whispers that we might see Alan Bowman in the second.

Scoring Update: OSU 7, UCA 0 | 1Q 2:58

After that slog of a defensive possession, OSU’s offense cruises back down the field and Brennan Presley pays it off with a TD.

In two drives, Rangel is 9-for-13 for 100 yards, one TD and one INT. First-year wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling has three catches for 52 yards.

Rucker made up for it with some nice coverage in the endzone to force fourth-and-10. And then Korie Black flies in off of the edge to block the FG attempt.

Trey Rucker gets flagged for a PI to turn a fourth-down to first-and-goal from the six.

And UCA just saw the end zone twice but both scores got wiped off the board due to self-inflicted penalties.

Things get worse as the UCA running back ShunDerrick Powell picks up 25 yards on a big run to put the Bears in Cowboy territory.

The Garret Rangel era got off to a rocky start. After starting 3-for-4 and driving the Cowboys 50 yards down the field during the opening drive, Rangel’s first drive of 2023 ended with a tipped interception in UCA territory. The Cowboys went for it on fourht-and-3.

The Cowboys are back in action with a visit from the neighboring Bears. While an FCS opponent isn’t always the most exciting, there are plenty of reasons to tune in (other than your nine-month withdraws of college football.

We want to see how the depth chart shakes out. At several positions. Mainly QB.

It looks like the Cowboys will be a little thinner at O-line.

QB Update: According to the Cowboy Radio Network, Garret Rangel will get the start at quarterback over Alan Bowman and Gunnar Gundy.

Pregame uni reveal: The Cowboys are christening their new retro-styled uniform kit with a white-orange-white look. It’s clean. It’s classic.
