Mike Boynton’s core staff will be entirely different for the Cowboys’ 2021-22 season.

Oklahoma State announced the additions of assistant coaches David Cason and Larry Blunt to round out Boynton’s staff on Monday afternoon.

Along with that news, Scott Sutton, son of legendary coach Eddie Sutton, will transfer to become OSU’s director of basketball administration, a similar role John Cooper held for OSU during the 2019-20 season. It’s also similar to what Sean Sutton, former OSU coach, does for Texas Tech. Sutton was Boynton’s longest-tenured assistant, joining the staff when Boynton was hired.

This news comes after Cannen Cunningham and Erik Pastrana parted ways with the program and Terrence Rencher was added from Creighton. NCAA basketball teams are allowed three assistant coaches.

Cason, a native of Baltimore, was the associate head coach at Florida International last season. He also spent two seasons under Shaka Smart at Texas. His other stops in various roles include North Carolina, Notre Dame, Tulsa, Florida Gulf Coast, VCU and Vanderbilt.

“When it comes to versatility of experience, it doesn’t get much better than David Cason,” Boynton said in OSU’s release. “Coach Cason has coached at every level of college basketball. He has proven time and time again that he has the ability to connect, recruit, develop and coach elite players for more than 20 years and has been a part of over 400 wins in his career. We are thankful to him and his wife, Tamara, for wanting to join us in our quest to take our program to the next level. His impact will be felt immediately by our players and staff.”

Larry Blunt was an assistant at Drake this past season, as the Bulldogs won a game in the NCAA Tournament.

He worked in founding Orangeville Prep in Canada, the school Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe attended. Blunt coached three seasons at Orangeville, where he coached Top-10 NBA Draft Picks Jamal Murray and Thon Maker.

He has also spent time as an assistant at Canisius.

“Coach Blunt is an outstanding addition to our staff,” Boynton said in the release. “His experience as an assistant at both Canisius and Drake, in addition to his experience running his own program, give me great confidence that he is ready to help us on our journey to build a champion in Stillwater. LB has recruited, developed and coached some elite talent in his time coaching and has the ‘Let’s Work’ mentality as he comes in the door. I’m excited to welcome him and Morgan to the Cowboy basketball family.”

OSU also announced that Barry Hinson’s position as an analyst had been restored. Hinson, an OSU alum, returned to his alma mater during the 2019-20 season, but his position was cut during the pandemic. However, he hung around working as a volunteer.

“”I’m so happy we are able to bring Barry back,” Boynton said. “There is not a greater example of Loyal and True than coach Hinson. He came here to earn his keep and prove his worth two years ago. He exceeded any expectations I could ever imagine and I’m glad we are able to reward his work.”
