Mike Gundy Given 16-1 Odds to Replace Urban Meyer at Ohio State
This is … interesting.
Another year, another reason to talk about Mike Gundy coaching elsewhere than Oklahoma State. No, I’m not talking about the Cowboys’ current two-game skid or the 14th-year head coach’s worst conference start since his first conference start. Things may not be exactly be rosy in Stillwater, but they’re maybe even worse in Columbus.
A betting line released by sportsbook BetOnline.ag, gave OSU’s current head coach 16-to-1 odds to be tOSU’s next head coach come spring 2019.
Odds to be the head coach of the Ohio State football program at the start of 2019 spring practice (@betonline_ag):
Meyer +125
Campbell +175
Brohm/Day/Stoops +1000
Fitzgerald +1200
Gundy/Kelly +1600
Kiffin/Babers +1800
Herman/Vrabel +2000
Harbaugh +4000
Belichick +5000— OddsShark (@OddsShark) October 24, 2018
Urban Meyer caught his fair share of ire during the offseason thanks to his involvement (or lack thereof) in a domestic violence scandal involving his former offensive coordinator Zach Smith. Now, after one of the worst losses of his career, a 49-20 rout at the hands of unranked Purdue, there are some pondering his long-term viability as the Buckeyes’ head man.
But I wouldn’t write Meyer’s tOSU tenure off just yet. In each of his previous regular season losses with the Buckeyes (there were only five!), his team has followed that defeat by either winning five straight or winning out.
Gundy, Oklahoma State’s most successful head coach ever, is obviously enduring a down year. But his charisma, reputation and continued success over a long period of time will lend his name to be thrown around anytime a big-time head coaching gig comes open (hypothetically or otherwise).
