Mike Gundy is returning to the national title game broadcast.

Oklahoma State’s now former coach (still feels weird saying that) will take part in the Coaches Film Room for Monday’s national title game between Indiana and Miami, according to That Athletic’s David Ubben. Gundy will be joined by former Boston College coach Steve Addazio, former Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson, former Iowa State/Auburn coach Gene Chizik and rules analyst Jerry McGinn.

This will mark the third time Gundy has taken part in the Coaches Film Room. The last time he did it was for the 2020 CFP Final (after the 2019 season). He watched that game alongside Gary Patterson, Pat Narduzzi and Derek Mason, who Gundy would hire as the Cowboys’ defensive coordinator a few years after.

Gundy’s Coaches Film Room debut came during the 2018 national title game (after the 2017 season) when he watched Alabama beat Georgia in OT. He watched that game alongside Kevin Sumlin and others.

These were some of the first moments people started saying, “Ya know, after Gundy is done coaching, he’d be great on TV.”

This will be one of Gundy’s more public appearances since his firing this September.

In 21 years as the Cowboys’ head coach, Gundy went 170-90, winning the Big 12 in 2011 and hoisting Fiesta Bowl trophies after the 2011 and 2021 seasons. He was the Big 12’s Coach of the Year on three occasions and was the National Coach of the Year in 2011.

OSU moved on from Gundy midseason this year after the Cowboys’ home loss to Tulsa — the Cowboys’ 11th straight loss to FBS competition.

Nothing has been said of what’s next for Gundy — whether that be him continuing to coach, going into TV, becoming a pro rattlesnake hunter or anywhere in between.

The Coaches Film Room will be on ESPNU during the national title game.
